Abstract

Philosophy serves as the ‘mother’ or ‘origin’ of all branches of knowledge. Before science and academic disciplines reached their current, highly advanced state, philosophy was the first field of inquiry to emerge and be studied by humanity. As human civilization and culture progressed rapidly, various specialized fields of study—such as the natural sciences, social sciences, and others—branched off from philosophy to focus on specific subject matters. However, the fact that these specialized disciplines separated from philosophy does not mean they are disconnected from it. There remains a significant, reciprocal relationship between philosophy and the various fields of knowledge that exist today; indeed, many philosophical inquiries rely on foundations or support derived from these other disciplines. Based on this, this study aims to explore the relationship between philosophy and language (linguistics), as well as the concept of the philosophy of language itself. The central question addressed in this research is: “What is the relationship between philosophy and language?” Utilizing an in-depth qualitative analysis, this study finds that the philosophy of language plays a crucial role in the development of linguistic studies. The philosophy of language is distinct in that it focuses specifically on issues concerning language—namely, linguistic expressions that possess meaning.
