Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Cigarette is responsible for the death of 6 million people worldwide each year, with approximately 600,000 deaths related to exposure to secondhand smoke (World Health Organization (WHO)). A molecular biomarker in smoking behavior is the high level of dopamine in the blood. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the differences in the blood dopamine levels between active and passive smokers. This comparative study consisted of 80 respondents, comprising 40 active and 40 passive smokers. The blood samples of 3 cc were taken from the vein and taken to the laboratory for measurement of dopamine level using the ELISA method. The results showed that the average dopamine level in active smokers was higher, at 70.48±21.89, while passive smokers at 65.98±25.30, with an average difference of 4.5 pg/ml. This suggested that smoking behavior could influence dopamine level in the blood of both active and passive smokers. Consequently, public awareness should to be raised about the health impacts of smoking, and the enforcement of smoking bans in public places such as Smoke-Free Areas (KTR/KUTARO) was essential to protect others from the dangers of exposure to cigarette smoke.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a common infectious disease that leads to the demineralization and structural degradation of the tooth's hard tissues, caused by acid-producing bacteria such as S. mutans through carbohydrate fermentation. One of the essential strategies for caries prevention is using fluoride to inhibit bacterial activity and enhance enamel remineralization. Anchovy  Stolephorus commersonnii, widely found in Indonesian waters, were rich in calcium and fluoride, particularly in the form of calcium fluoride (CaF₂), which may offer potential benefits in preventing dental caries. Objective: This study aimed to assess the fluoride concentration in S. commersonnii nanopowder to evaluate its potential as a natural source of fluoride for dental caries prevention. Materials and Methods: This research was a descriptive laboratory-based experimental study. The sample was Stolephorus commersonnii (S. commersonnii). The sample was prepared through drying, acid maceration, and high-energy milling to produce nanoparticle powder. Fluoride content was measured using two methods: a colorimetric method with a spectrophotometer and a portable fluoridemeter based on the SPADNS method. Results: The results showed that the fluoride concentration was 21.05 mg/100 g (21.05 ppm) by spectrophotometry and 20.0 ppm using the SPADNS method. The S. commersonnii nanopowder contained 1,305.80 mg/100 g calcium, 281.60 mg/100 g phosphorus, and 91.5% of particles were in the nano size. Conclusion: S. commersonnii nanopowder contains a considerable amount of fluoride and minerals, suggesting its potential as a natural dietary source of fluoride in supporting dental caries prevention strategies.

Abstract

Clear aligners are gaining popularity as an alternative to conventional fixed orthodontic appliances in orthodontic treatment due to the aesthetic appeal and comfort. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to discuss the current state of aesthetical value, clinical efficacy, material, and limitations of clear aligners in orthodontic treatments compared to fixed orthodontic appliances. A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, ScienceDirect, EBSCOHost, and Google Scholar, resulting in 657 articles, and only 19 met the inclusion criteria for in-depth analysis. The result showed that clear aligners, particularly Invisalign, are effective for mild to moderate malocclusions, offering enhanced aesthetics and increased patient satisfaction. However, these appliances are less effective than traditional braces in achieving precise tooth movements, such as occlusal adjustments and torque control. Advances in aligner materials, such as improved elasticity and reduced biofilm accumulation showed great potential but are limited by the amount of study found. In addition to the aesthetical value, clear aligners provide better treatment outcomes than fixed orthodontic appliances depending on the complexity of the malocclusion being treated.
