Abstract

This study aims to analyze the empowerment of a disability community in the production of batik ciprat (splash batik) at Sheltered Workshop Peduli (SWP) Sambung Roso, Simbatan Village, Magetan Regency. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach through observation, interviews, and documentation. The study is grounded in Jim Ife's (1995) community empowerment theory, which encompasses four dimensions of empowerment: access, participation, control, and support. As a complement, this study also analyzes Ife's five powers of empowerment personal choice, self-determination of needs, freedom of expression, institutional strength, and economic resources to identify supporting and hindering factors in greater detail. The results indicate that the empowerment of the disability community has proceeded fairly well, though not yet optimally. Access and support have progressed reasonably well, marked by adequate production facilities, skills training, and support from the government, facilitators, and the wider community. Empowerment is considered not yet optimal because participation and control among persons with disabilities remain low. Their attendance and involvement in production activities are inconsistent and uneven. Persons with disabilities are not yet actively involved in decision-making, and business management remains dominated by facilitators. In addition, business competition and dependence on batik sales pose further obstacles to the empowerment process. This study shows that members of the disability community hold potential as creative and independent actors in social development and the preservation of local culture.
