Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication patterns of the K-Pop fandom NCTzen on social media as a form of digital interaction and the formation of collective identity. The selection of NCTzen as the object of research is based on the characteristics of the fandom that actively utilizes digital platforms to build interactions, coordinate collective activities, and strengthen solidarity among fans. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with digital ethnography methods. Data were collected through non-participant digital observation, in-depth online interviews, and digital documentation studies on platforms X, Instagram, and TikTok. The results show that NCTzen communication patterns are not only formed through the use of fandom-specific language and digital symbols, but also through collective coordination practices, such as the use of trending hashtags and the implementation of fan projects, which strengthen participation and shared identity. Other findings indicate that the intensity and direction of fandom interactions are related to certain moments, such as comebacks and concerts, when platform features and social media algorithm mechanisms play a role in expanding visibility and encouraging the mobilization of fan participation. These findings emphasize that communication within the fandom is not merely a means of exchanging information and expressing support, but also a social practice for building collective identity and organizing collective action in the digital space. Theoretically, this research contributes to digital communication and fandom studies by demonstrating the relationship between participatory communication practices, collective identity formation, and the dynamics of social media platforms within online fan communities.
