Abstract

Cervical cancer, caused mainly by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, has serious psychosocial consequences, including depression. Depression after a cancer diagnosis may disturb cognitive function, heighten pain perception, and reduce treatment adherence, while a life-threatening illness often leads patients to question the meaning and purpose of life. This study aimed to determine the relationship between spiritual well-being and depression in cervical cancer patients at RSUD Arjawinangun, Cirebon Regency. A quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach was used. All 33 cervical cancer patients treated at the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic were recruited through total sampling. Spiritual well-being was measured with the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) and depression with the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II); data were analyzed using the Spearman rank test. Most respondents had high spiritual well-being (17 respondents, 51.5%) and most experienced mild depression (18 respondents, 54.5%). The Spearman rank test yielded p < 0.001 with r = 0.609, indicating a strong and significant relationship between spiritual well-being and depression in cervical cancer patients. Cross-tabulation showed that respondents with higher spiritual well-being tended to experience milder depression. Spiritual care should therefore be integrated into the nursing care of cervical cancer patients.
