Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of varying honeycomb cell wall thicknesses on the impact strength of coconut coir fiber composites. Specimens were fabricated with four cell wall thickness variations—0.5 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2 mm—with three specimens per variation. Impact testing was conducted using the Izod method in accordance with the ASTM D256 standard. Analysis involved measuring cross-sectional area and absorbed energy, as well as calculating impact strength based on the ratio of energy to cross-sectional area. The results indicate that the cross-sectional area increased from 90 mm² at a thickness of 0.5 mm to 124 mm² at 2 mm. The average absorbed energy values were 7.90 J, 7.20 J, 9.87 J, and 14.57 J, respectively. The corresponding average impact strength values were 0.0878 J/mm², 0.0720 J/mm², 0.0865 J/mm², and 0.1175 J/mm². The relationship between cell wall thickness and impact strength exhibited a non-linear pattern. Under the conditions of this study, the 2 mm thickness yielded the highest average impact strength (0.1175 J/mm²), albeit with the greatest data dispersion. The findings demonstrate that honeycomb cell wall thickness variations influence the impact strength of coconut coir fiber composites and highlight the importance of fabrication process consistency in producing specimens with uniform mechanical responses.
