Abstract

The effect of alkali treatment on the wettability of coconut fiber-polyester composites was investigated. The fibers were treated with 3% solution of NaOH for 1, 2, and 3 hours. Wettability of the fibers was measured through the measurement of polyester resin contact angle dropped on either untreated fibers or alkali treated fibers. Upon drying, the droplet on the fiber matrix was observed by analyzed software supported microscope. Contact angle decreased by alkalization, therefore the quality of bond was expected to increase. Decreasing contact angle was assumed due to the increasing of fiber surface roughness and porosity, the loss of lignin, and the loss of other impurities. The increasing quality of bond between the fiber and the matrix was believed to increase the strength properties of coconut fiber composites-polyester fiber compared to that of untreated. Keywords: coconut fiber, contact angle, droplet, wettability

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of varying honeycomb cell wall thicknesses on the impact strength of coconut coir fiber composites. Specimens were fabricated with four cell wall thickness variations—0.5 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2 mm—with three specimens per variation. Impact testing was conducted using the Izod method in accordance with the ASTM D256 standard. Analysis involved measuring cross-sectional area and absorbed energy, as well as calculating impact strength based on the ratio of energy to cross-sectional area. The results indicate that the cross-sectional area increased from 90 mm² at a thickness of 0.5 mm to 124 mm² at 2 mm. The average absorbed energy values were 7.90 J, 7.20 J, 9.87 J, and 14.57 J, respectively. The corresponding average impact strength values were 0.0878 J/mm², 0.0720 J/mm², 0.0865 J/mm², and 0.1175 J/mm². The relationship between cell wall thickness and impact strength exhibited a non-linear pattern. Under the conditions of this study, the 2 mm thickness yielded the highest average impact strength (0.1175 J/mm²), albeit with the greatest data dispersion. The findings demonstrate that honeycomb cell wall thickness variations influence the impact strength of coconut coir fiber composites and highlight the importance of fabrication process consistency in producing specimens with uniform mechanical responses.

Abstract

Honeycomb-structured composite materials are widely used in engineering applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent energy absorption capabilities. Utilizing natural fibers, such as coconut coir, as the honeycomb core material offers an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative. However, the mechanical properties of the composite—particularly impact strength—are significantly influenced by the type of resin used as the matrix. This study aims to analyze the effect of resin type on the impact strength of coconut coir-core honeycomb composites and to identify the resin type that yields the best performance. The research employs a laboratory experimental method involving two resin variations: polyester resin and epoxy resin. Specimens were fabricated with a honeycomb structure, with volume fractions and dimensions controlled according to testing standards. Impact strength testing was conducted using the Charpy (or Izod) method in accordance with ASTM standards. The obtained data were analyzed quantitatively to compare the absorbed energy and impact strength values across the resin variations, and visually to identify the resulting fracture patterns. The study is expected to reveal significant differences in impact strength attributable to the resin types used. Resins exhibiting superior adhesion and toughness are anticipated to yield higher impact strength values and more ductile fracture patterns. This research aims to contribute to the development of lightweight, strong, and eco-friendly natural fiber-based composite materials for structural applications requiring resistance to impact loads.

Abstract

There is an increasing need for the development of lightweight and eco-friendly composite materials for various engineering applications. Honeycomb structures possess a high strength-to-weight ratio, while coconut coir fiber is an abundant natural material with potential for use as a composite reinforcement (Adeniyi et al., 2019). This study aims to analyze the effect of varying cell heights on the impact strength of coconut coir fiber-based honeycomb composites. An experimental method was employed, involving the fabrication of honeycomb composite specimens with various cell heights. Testing was conducted using the Charpy impact test method to determine the absorbed energy and impact strength values. The test data were then analyzed to examine the relationship between cell height and impact resistance. The results indicate that variations in cell height influence the impact strength of the composites; differences in cell height alter the material's capacity to absorb impact energy. Thus, cell height is a critical parameter in the design of coconut coir fiber-based honeycomb composites to achieve optimal impact resistance.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of varying bamboo cell wall thicknesses on the impact strength of sandwich composites featuring a honeycomb core structure. The bamboo cell wall thickness variations used were 1 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2 mm. Testing was conducted on nine specimens, with three specimens per variation. The Izod impact test method, based on the ASTM D256 standard, was employed. The parameters analyzed included absorbed energy and impact strength, the latter being calculated as the ratio of absorbed energy to the specimen's cross-sectional area. The results indicate that varying the bamboo cell wall thickness yields different values for absorbed energy and impact strength. The average absorbed energy values for thicknesses of 1 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2 mm were 15.30 J, 7.27 J, and 8.26 J,respectively. Meanwhile, the average impact strengths obtained were 0.0645 J/mm2, 0.0462 J/mm2, and 0.0531 J/mm2,respectively. The highest impact strength was observed at a thickness of 1 mm, while the lowest was observed at 1.5 mm. These results demonstrate that the relationship between bamboo cell wall thickness and impact strength is non-linear; increasing the cell wall thickness does not necessarily enhance the structure’s capacity to absorb impact energy. Based on the findings, the 1 mm bamboo cell wall thickness represents the optimal variation in this study, as it yielded the highest impact strength. Bamboo-based honeycomb structures show potential for development as lightweight sandwich composite core materials capable of absorbing impact energy.

Abstract

Bamboo-based honeycomb composites have the potential to be used as lightweight structures with impact resistance capabilities; however, their mechanical performance is affected by the geometric configuration of the cells. This study aims to analyze the effect of bamboo cell height variations on the absorbed energy and impact strength of honeycomb composites. An experimental method was conducted using three cell height variations, namely 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm, with three specimens for each variation. The bamboo thickness was maintained at 1 mm, while the faceplate thickness and width were 2 mm and 22 mm, respectively. Impact testing was performed to determine absorbed energy, followed by impact strength calculations based on the energy-to-cross-sectional-area ratio. The results showed average absorbed energy values of 14.00 J, 16.27 J, and 13.63 J for cell heights of 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm, respectively. The corresponding impact strengths were 0.129630, 0.137853, and 0.106510 J/mm². The results indicate a nonlinear relationship between cell height and impact performance, with 15 mm providing the optimal balance between deformation capability and structural stability. Therefore, a 15 mm cell height is the most effective configuration within the tested range for lightweight impact-absorbing structures.

Abstract

Partition walls are widely used in modern building construction due to their cost-effectiveness, lightweight nature, and ease of installation. One innovation in partition material development involves utilizing natural fiber waste, such as coconut coir, as reinforcement for sandwich composites. This study aims to analyze the effect of coconut coir fiber length in the "skin" layer on the impact strength of sandwich composites intended for use as wall partition materials. A quantitative experimental method was employed, utilizing two fiber length variations—long fibers (uncut natural fibers) and short fibers (1–2 cm)—at a volume fraction of 40% fiber and 60% epoxy resin. Impact testing was conducted using an Izod impact testing machine in accordance with ASTM D256 standards. The results indicate that specimens with short fibers exhibited an average impact energy of 14.57 Joules and an average impact strength of 0.1175 J/mm², whereas specimens with long fibers showed an average impact energy of 14.17 Joules and an average impact strength of 0.1142 J/mm². Although the difference in impact strength between the two variations was relatively small (±0.0033 J/mm²), the short fibers demonstrated a more uniform distribution within the matrix, thereby inhibiting crack propagation more effectively than the long fibers. Thus, coconut coir fiber length influences the impact strength of sandwich composites, with the short fiber variation (1–2 cm) tending to yield slightly higher impact strength compared to the long fiber variation.
