Abstract

Bamboo-based honeycomb composites have the potential to be used as lightweight structures with impact resistance capabilities; however, their mechanical performance is affected by the geometric configuration of the cells. This study aims to analyze the effect of bamboo cell height variations on the absorbed energy and impact strength of honeycomb composites. An experimental method was conducted using three cell height variations, namely 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm, with three specimens for each variation. The bamboo thickness was maintained at 1 mm, while the faceplate thickness and width were 2 mm and 22 mm, respectively. Impact testing was performed to determine absorbed energy, followed by impact strength calculations based on the energy-to-cross-sectional-area ratio. The results showed average absorbed energy values of 14.00 J, 16.27 J, and 13.63 J for cell heights of 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm, respectively. The corresponding impact strengths were 0.129630, 0.137853, and 0.106510 J/mm². The results indicate a nonlinear relationship between cell height and impact performance, with 15 mm providing the optimal balance between deformation capability and structural stability. Therefore, a 15 mm cell height is the most effective configuration within the tested range for lightweight impact-absorbing structures.
