Abstract

Stunting prevention in Indonesia increasingly looks to adolescent girls, because a woman's nutritional status before conception shapes the growth of the child she will carry. School-based screening of stunting risk factors among late adolescents, however, is rarely documented in rural areas. This study aimed to describe the results of adolescent health screening as an early detection effort for stunting risk at SMK NU Sunan Ampel Poncokusumo, Malang Regency. A descriptive quantitative survey was conducted in June 2025 among 70 grade XII female students aged 17–21 years, selected by simple random sampling from a population of 226. Body mass index (BMI), capillary haemoglobin, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and smoking behaviour were assessed and analysed as frequencies and percentages. Just over half of the girls (51.4%) had a BMI outside the normal range (31.4% underweight, 20.0% overweight or obese), 44.3% were anaemic, and 34.3% had a MUAC below 23.5 cm, indicating chronic energy deficiency. None of them smoked. Overall, 74.3% carried at least one stunting risk factor and 42.9% carried two or more. Most of these prospective mothers therefore face nutritional risks years before marriage. Routine school screening linked to weekly iron–folic acid supplementation and nutrition counselling is recommended
