Abstract

The Active and Healthy School program was implemented to strengthen elementary school academic community members’ understanding of physical literacy and to encourage a school environment that supports physical activity in an active, safe, inclusive, and sustainable manner. The program was conducted on September 21, 2026, at Tegalrejo 1 Public Elementary School, Yogyakarta City, involving representatives from 10 public elementary schools in Tegalrejo District. A total of 62 participants, consisting of principals, physical education teachers, classroom teachers, and educational staff, participated in the program. A participatory approach was used through an opening and aperception session, interactive presentations, discussions, introduction to the four domains of physical literacy, reflection, and introduction to simple assessment and digital media. The activity results indicate that participants gained an initial understanding of the distinctions among physical activity, exercise, sport, and physical education; understood the physical, psychological, social, and cognitive domains of physical literacy; and identified at least one small change that could be implemented in their respective schools. Knowledge evaluation showed an increase in the mean score from 8.82 to 9.18, or 0.35 points. However, this finding is interpreted only as an initial indication of participant learning rather than evidence of program effectiveness because of limitations in the assessment instrument and evaluation design. Continued mentoring, measurable indicators, and integration of physical literacy into school programs and academic calendars are recommended.
