Abstract

Even though it’s originated from the same word oikos, literally means house, the discussion about ecological economics tend to be located in the opposite enterprises. In the abstract level, the discussions about ecology focus on the sustainability and conservation of biodiversity while the economic discourses lean toward the development and growth. Furthermore, many environmentalists accuse the thriving economic growth and development lead to ecological calamity. On the other hand, the economics technocrats suspiciously perceive the environmentalist as anti-growth and development. Even though Islamic classical literatures do not contain the word economy and ecology, yet the discourse about maintaining the limited resources of the earth for human development and growth have already and continuously scrutinized.  Reflecting from the situations, this paper tries to bridge the tense relation between ecology and economy by elaborating the Islamic ethics of stewardship into both field studies. In doing so, the discussion shall begin by examining the field of ecology and economy in order to find common ground between the two. The ways we comprehend ecology in Islamic perspectives helps us to refine our understanding and practices in Islamic economics, and vice versa, this “green” Islamic economy might contribute to enhance our environmental situations.

Many countries strongly rely on deradicalization path to solve terrorism catastrophe. However, they mostly still focus on the terrorists themselves and lack of attention to the people around them particularly their children. While in some local to the international cases of terrorism, children have involved actively in those acts. This article delivers a significant instance on how to avert the new generation of terrorism particularly from the kinship path. This article focuses on an Islamic boarding school or pesantren (Al-Hidayah) run by a former terrorist (Al-Ghazali) with the main purpose is deradicalization program towards the terrorists’ children. This article is based on the field research, the collecting of the data using depth interview as the primer data and exposure some references as the secondary data. This article found that deradicalization towards terrorist’s children is better under the education platform or pesantren, because it provides two things; firstly, children can gain their right to reach the education after they were marginalized even excluded from their former school. Secondly, it becomes a new home for the children where support the way to apply deradicalization program through the formal model (within the class) and informal model (out the class). There are four significant prograsm that Al-Hidayah pesantren applied namely a green school, life skill, tahfiz class, and trauma healing. Generally, it is success as a curative and preventive action. Although the pesantren receives some financial supports from the government and some other parties, it still struggles to raise more funds to provide free education for its student.

Abstract

Women's involvement in the Forum of Religious Harmony (Forum Kerukunan Umat Beragama - FKUB) is still rare. However, some FKUBs exhibit openness to women’s engagement. This study examines whether women’s involvement in the FKUB challenges the dominant beliefs and behaviors within religious groups and whether their involvement creates possibilities for change and contestation. Using a case study on the FKUB Bali and Sidoarjo and leveraging the theory from gender and masculinity studies to help frame the analysis, the study revealed two strategies used to involve women, which included forming a separate entity exclusively for women and developing an expanded familial framework inside FKUB. The findings also show that women's involvement is encouraged without altering the current structures. However, this study also discovered that the transformative masculinity exhibited by certain chairpersons contributed to the implementation of these strategies. They were strongly dedicated to gender equality, advocated for women's empowerment and involvement, and prioritized sustainable dispute resolution development. This study highlights the potential to expand research to include more cases, providing deeper insight into inclusion strategies and the role of transformative masculinity in progress toward gender equality._______________The original draft of this article has been presented at the 23rd Annual International Conference on Islamic Studies (AICIS), February 1-4, 2024, at Universitas Islam Negeri Walisongo Semarang, Indonesia.

Abstract

The fascinating influence of world religion has given important impact to the existence of indigenous religion such as Aluk To Dolo within the life of the Christian Torajan Youth who live in Yogyakarta. Aluk To Dolo as one of indigenous religions in Indonesia, in fact, is almost in the position of weak as its followers are decreasing in its region of origin, Tanah Toraja of Sulawesi. It is found that only one leader is still remaining in Toraja accompanied by the practice of Rambu Solo which is also still being maintained in the region. This work is based on the view of the youth toward Alok To Dolo as the youth play an important role to determine and negotiate the inheritance of their religion including indigenous religion within their life. This article examines how Christian Torajan Youth perceive Christianity and Aluk To Dolo. Data collection is conducted through depth interview and focused group discussion with a group of Christian Torajan Youth members who stay in Yogyakarta for their studies. They are affiliated to Torajan student organizations and Torajan tribal church in Yogyakarta. This work concludes that Torajan students perceive the Aluk To Dolo as pendamping agama or the companion of religion they practice (Christianity) besides perceiving it as their cultural home base. In other words, they mean the Aluk To Dolo for cultural practices supporting their Christianity practice in their life. It is also found that the decreasing of the practice of Alok To Dolo by the students is more caused by three factors including the distance to the origin land, the influence from the Toraja tribal church, and the literatures having influence in their believe. As student, although the Christian Torajan youth are close and more influenced by literatures in Christianity (church), they also practice the teachings of the local religion to keep their cultural identity.
