Abstract

The rapid development of technology has offered an opportunity to tackle environmental issues such as rivers pollution from uncontrolled waste disposal. Waste accumulation in rivers is important for water quality, aquatic habitats and environmental sustainability. Manual processes limit traditional methods for cleaning and monitoring rivers in that they are time-consuming, labor-intensive, expensive and ineffective for continuous monitoring. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the effectiveness of the method of waste management in the river by means of automation and remote control. The present research proposes to develop and evaluate a prototype of an aquatic robot based on the Internet of Things (IoT) that monitors and collects floating debris via remote control from a cell phone using the Blynk application. The system is based on an ESP32 microcontroller, a camera module and three main sensors: an ultrasonic distance sensor, a color sensor for trash recognition and a waste weight detector by means of a load cell . The system was tested to verify the sensor, navigation, trash detection, and remote monitoring accuracy. The results show that the ultrasonic sensor can measure the distance of objects in the range 1-30 cm with 100% accuracy. The load cell sensor measured waste load up to 300g with 96% accuracy. The color sensor can distinguish between the different kinds of garbage by their color properties. Furthermore, the robotic navigation system and DC motor control and camera monitoring function were successfully implemented on the Blynk platform. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system for efficient monitoring and collection of river garbage.
