Abstract

Strombus turturella is a type of gastropods that live in the shallow coastal area of the Dompak Island. A research aims to understand the morphometrical, meristical characteristics and growth patterns of S. turturella from the Dompak Island was conducted in June-July 2018. The number of snail sampled was 400, with 46.98-83.07 TL mm and 13-46 grams BW. There were six morphological characteristics measured, there were total length, shell length, aperture length, shell width, shell depth and lip thickness, and there was one meristical characteristic count, namely the number of spire. Results shown that there are 5 morphometrical characteristic differences in males and females. Total length of male is longer than that of the female. While other characteristics, such as the shell length and aperture of the females were longer, the shell was wider, deeper and the lip was thicker than those of the males. The number of spire was 4-9 in males and 4-8 in females. The lengh-weight relationship shown that the growth of males and females is allometric negative (b=0.503).

Abstract

Teluk Benderas Lake is an oxbow lake formed because the Kampar River's flow was cut off. This lake is a habitat for various types of fish. However, information on fish species in the area is still limited. To find out the kinds of fish in Teluk Benderas Lake, a study was conducted in March-May 2023 using the survey method. Fish sampling was performed once a week for two months. The fish were caught using a trawl measuring 150 m long and 4,5 m wide with 1-inch mesh size. Water quality parameters measured were temperature, brightness, depth, pH, DO, and CO2. The results showed that 1.398 fish were caught, consisting of 4 orders, 13 families, 25 genera, and 32 species. Based on the results of water quality measurements, it was concluded that Teluk Benderas Lake can still support fish life in the waters.

Abstract

Pangasianodon hypophthalmus is a freshwater fish that can grow well in dark condition. In no light condition, fishes are more responsive to feed provided. However, phytoplankton may not grow well, and as a consequence the water quality was poor and it negatively effects the fish health in general. The combination of biofloc and photoperiod manipulation systems is expected to improve the water quality as well as the fish health. To understand health status of the fish in general, the histological structure gill, kidney and liver was investigated. Sample were fixed in 5% formalin, paraffin processed and Haematoxylin Eosin stained. There were 2 factor, 3 treatment applied, namely natural (control), 18G (18 hours dark), 24G (24 hours dark) and 3 repetition. Parameter measured were survival rate and histological structure of gill, kidney, intestine and liver. Results shown that there are not difference of histological structure of the organs of fish reared under biofloc and manipulated photoperiod systems. There were light abnormalities in the gill, such as hyperplasia, hypertrophy, oedema and necrosis. There is no negative effect of biofloc system and photoperiod manipulation in structure of fish organ as there is only light abnormalities that can be cured when the water quality is good.

Abstract

Luciocephalus pulcher lives in peat swamps, and the male incubates the eggs in the mouth. A study aimed to determine morphometric characters and differences in the oral structure of male and female fish was conducted from June to July 2024. Fish samples were caught in the upper Sibam River. 5 times, once/week. The morphometrical characteristics were measured, and the fish mouth structure was observed. Results showed that 32 fish were caught, consisting of 21 males and 11 females. Of the 37 morphometric characters observed, 18 differed between males and females. These characters included total length, head length, body height, caudal peduncle height, eye diameter, anal fin to caudal fin base distance, dorsal fin base length, pectoral fin base length, anal fin height, ventral fin base length, caudal fin base length, lower jaw length, upper jaw length, lower jaw width, gular sac width, lower lip length and upper lip length. The total length of male fish ranged from 48-135 mm, while females were 48-135 mm. Fin characteristics in male and female fish were the same, with the formula D.I, 8-12 P.12-15 V.6-7 A.I, 14-20 C.13-15. The difference in mouth characters was seen in the gular sac. The gular sac of male fish was wider with thicker tissue, more folded, more flexible, elastic skin tissue, and smaller, more flexible hyoid bone. In contrast, female fish have smaller, less elastic gular sacs, thinner tissue, and less folded and thicker hyoid bone.

Abstract
