Abstract

This research  aims to find out students' views on intercultural competence in learning English speaking. This competence is seen as a fundamental aspect in building effective cross-cultural communication, especially in the context of foreign language learning. The research utilized mixed methods, involving 30 second semester students from Universitas Mercu Buana Yogyakarta who were enrolled in Speaking course. Data collection was conducted through an intercultural competence questionnaire, semi-structured interviews in Focus Group Discussions, direct classroom observations, as well as open-ended questions. From the quantitative results, it was found that students have a high level of cultural awareness and openness, but their cultural knowledge and cross-cultural communication skills are still classified as moderate to low. Meanwhile, qualitative data analysis showed that students understood the importance of cultural insights to support speaking skills, but they felt that the learning process had not fully supported the development of intercultural competence optimally.Based on these findings, this study recommends that cultural elements be integrated more deeply in the teaching of speaking, so that students can be better prepared to face the challenges of global communication. The findings of this study are expected to be a reference in the development of intercultural competence-based English language learning curriculum in higher education.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the use of picture series media to build students' vocabulary to supports their basic writing skills. This study used the pre-experimental method with one group pretest posttest design and data collection was carried out by administering pretest, treatment and posttest. The sample of this research was students of class VIII A of SMP N 1 Sedayu, which consisted of 30 students in the 2023/2024 academic year. The research sample was chosen randomly. The findings of the researchers show that the mean score of students in basic writing skill as evidenced by the post-test was 13.50% higher than the students mean score in the pre-test of 76.76 and the value of the t-test was greater than the table- t (t-testt-table). Basic writing score was bigger than t-table (Sig.0.05 = 0.0010.05), meaning that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. In other words, the use of pictures series can build students' vocabulary mastery effectively to help their basic writing skills.

Abstract

Developing Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is crucial for pre-service English teachers, yet they often lack practical collaboration. This mixed-method study determines the implementation of Professional Learning Community (PLC) practices in fostering TPACK competency and identifies key challenges and best practices in their implementation. Data was collected using a Likert-Scale Questionnaire to measure perceptions of PLC and semi-structured interviews for in-depth experiences. The PLC model proved in building all TPACK components, evidenced by overwhelmingly positive perception scores: Technological Knowledge (TK) and Pedagogical Knowledge (PK) both averaged 94.28, and Content Knowledge (CK) averaged 90.49. This demonstrates increased confidence in integrating digital tools and successfully combining Technology, Pedagogy, and Content. The most successful practices identified were real-world application, structured group reflection, and professional guidance. However, the study identified the challenges, primarily related to time constraints for discussions and the need for improved post-session support. Furthermore, the PLC is a highly successful model for holistic TPACK development. By addressing the minor issues related to session timing and support, the already effective program can be further optimized for better success in transferring competencies to the classroom.
