Abstract

This research investigated the effect of extensive reading on students reading comprehension. The writer used the quantitative as the researched method and the writer used the queasy experiment as the research design. For collecting the data the writer gave the test for experimental and control group. For experimental group the writer used the extensive reading method as the reading class room and the other method for the control group. After the post- test gave to both classes, the writer analyzed it by using SPPS 20 program to found out the improvement on student reading comprehension after extensive reading implied on reading classroom. Based on the finding and discussion. It can be concluded that hypothesis was accepted. It meant that there was effect on extensive reading on student reading comprehension. Based on the resulted of this research. The writer suggested the teacher to used extensive reading on reading process to improved student reading comprehension.

Abstract

In using language, there are a lot of varieties in represent the language. One of them  is code mixing. Indonesian people use code mixing not only in speaking but also in written text. One of written text contains code mixing is novel Takbir Cinta Zahrana. In the novel, the authot represent the characters use code mixing in their daily conversation. They mixes  Bahasa and Javanese language. This paper is conducted to get some information about code mixing, especially in novel Takbir Cinta Zahrana The first one is about the level of code mixing, the second one is about factor of code mixing, and the last one is about reason why the characters in the novel using code mixing. The research used qualitative research. The data were collected from the contain of the novel. After doing analyzing, the researcher roll out some facts. The level of code mixing in the novel is dominated by word level,  factors of using code mixing are popular term,  speaker and speaker character,  prestigious factor, and domicile and time of conversation. The last fact is 3 reasons of using code mixng in novel Takbir Cinta Zahrana. They are social roles and relationships of participants; situational factors: discourse topic and language allocation; message-intrinsic considerations; and language attitudes including social dominance and security.

Abstract

Learning English grammar using conversational techniques is one way to make it easier for students to understand. This research aims to discover students' perceptions of learning English grammar using informal techniques. The ultimate goal is to determine whether conversational techniques in learning English grammar are good or not to be applied in learning English, especially English grammar lessons. The results of this research are that English students feel comfortable and find it easier to learn English grammar using conversational techniques than lecture techniques and others.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the types of racism and the effect of racism on the main character in 42 movies directed by Brian Helgeland. The method of this analysis is the descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research are 1.) The types of racism of the main character are Individual Racism and Cultural Racism. 2.) There are three effects of racism on the main character; the social relation of the main character to his teammates, the violence of his opponent, and injury because of violence.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify derivational and inflectional morphemes in song lyrics of Lewis Capaldi. Specifically, the purpose of this research is to know the affixation process in the song lyrics, to classify derivational and inflectional morphemes, and to know the most dominant between derivational and inflectional morphemes in the song lyrics of Lewis Capaldi. The method of this research used descriptive qualitative. The object of this research was taken from the song lyrics of Lewis Capaldi’s album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent as the first album. The result of this research shows: (1) there are 42 words suffixes such as -ing, -ed, -s, -ness, -able, -ly and one-word prefix re- (2) There are 29 inflectional morphemes and 67,44% while derivational morpheme occurs 14 times and 32,56%, it means inflectional morpheme is the most dominant than derivational morpheme.

Abstract

The purpose of this research are to find features of ambitious people, discover kinds of Murray’s human needs, and analyze factors that determine ambition-level of the main character. Therefore, to seek the result, Quintessence novel by Jess Redman is chosen in this research. This study uses the descriptive qualitative method to investigate the data. The data were gathered by reading the novel, examining passages, collecting important parts and explaining the result. The result of this research reveals; (1) 13 features of ambitious people in the main character there are personal interest, willing to connect, strong desire, problem solving, confidence, motive others, hardworking, risk taker, maximize capability, emotion stability, self-development, critical thinking, and kind-hearted person, (2) in total, 17 kinds of human needs are catered when the main character pursuing her ambition goal there are conversance, order, construction, achievement, infavoidance, defendance, conteraction, dominance, deference, similance, autonomy, blameavoidance, affilation, succorance, nurturance, cognizance, exposition and (3) some factors determine ambition-level of main character are located such as prior experience, purpose of ambition, group influence and realism.

Abstract

The purpose of this research are to figure out (1) the effects of discrimination and (2) how to deal with discrimination to finally give the discriminated person some positive effects. This research is arranged by using descriptive qualitative method. The data was taken from Crazy Rich Asians movie by selecting the scene of discrimination cases and grouping them into some types of discrimination. The fundamental theory used in analyzing this research is from Stafrace. The results show there are four types of negative effects experienced by the main character, they are marginalization, disempowerment, low self-esteem and self-identity, and negative behaviours. While in dealing with discrimination, the main character of the movie focus on 4 ways, (1) focus on her strength, (2) seek support system, (3) help herself think clearly, and (4) don’t dwell. Finally, in the way of her ability in handling the discrimination, she found three positive effects after being treated. She becomes more courageous, though, and more confident

Abstract

The research aims to analyze the phenomenon of Bilingualism, Sociolinguistics, and code-mixing, that occurs in daily conversations, providing insight into how bilingual individuals manage language effectively and emphasizing the importance of context in language use. Code-mixing refers to the use of two or more languages in a single sentence or expression. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method by repeatedly watching Denny Summargo’s Podcast with Maudy Ayunda in an episode entitled “Sombong & Star Syndrome!? Aku Hampir Batal nikah dengan Jesse Choi!! Maudy Ayunda-Curhat Bang” and referring to theories from books and journals as data collection techniques. The researcher concluded the results of his findings where the out of 135 data, 107 data used the Intra-Sentential Mixing type, 22 data used Intra-Lexical Mixing, 5 data used Clause Level Mixing and 1 data used Tag Mixing. The findings reveal type of code- mixing. Factors such as habits, environmental influences, repetition, the intention to clarify speech content, and the expression of group identity were identified. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis fenomena bilingualisme, sosiolinguistik, dan campur kode yang terjadi dalam percakapan sehari-hari, memberikan wawasan tentang bagaimana individu bilingual mengelola bahasa secara efektif dan menekankan pentingnya konteks dalam penggunaan bahasa. Campur kode mengacu pada penggunaan dua bahasa atau lebih dalam satu kalimat atau ekspresi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan menonton berulang kali podcast youtube channel Denny Sumargo Bersama Maudy Ayunda dalam satu episode berjudul “Sombong & Star Syndrome!? Aku Hampir Batal nikah dengan Jesse Choi!! Maudy Ayunda-Curhat Bang” dan merujuk pada teori dari buku dan jurnal sebagai teknik pengumpulan data. Peneliti menyimpukan hasil dari temuannya dimana dari 135 data terdapat 107 data yang menggunakan tipe Intra-Sentensial Mixing, 22 data menggunakan Intra-Lexical Mixing, 5 data menggunakan Clause Level Mixing dan 1 data menggunakan Tag Mixing. Temuan penelitian mengungkap jenis campur kode. Faktor-faktor seperti kebiasaan, pengaruh lingkungan, pengulangan, niat untuk memperjelas isi tuturan, dan ekspresi identitas kelompok diidentifikasi.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out kinds of figurative language in Indonesian kids songs (Burung Kutilang by Ibu Sud, Cicak di Dinding by AT Mahmud, Kasih Ibu by SM Mochtar, Naik Delman by Pak Kasur, Naik Kereta Api by Ibu Sud, Tik Tik Bunyi Hujan by Ibu Sud, Balonku by Pak Kasur, Kembang Apiku by Pak Kasur, Kring Kring Ada Sepeda by Pak Kasur, Si Kancil Nakal by Ibu Sud). Those songs were chosen because easy listening, the words are easy to understand, and those songs are very popular till now eventhough those are old songs. The author got the the song lyrics from website and YouTube. Descriptive qualitative method is used by the author in conducting this research. In this research, the author found five figurative languages in those songs, they are personification, onomatopoeia, simile, metaphore, and symbolism. The most dominant figurative language are personification and onomatopoeia. Those songs have seven personification and seven onomatopoeia. The reason why the song writers use figurative language in their songs because it is easier to remember and can increase children intelligence.

Abstract

Speech acts are important in communication as it not only conveys information, but also perform actions and influences hearer. In spontaneous media like podcast, the natural use of language is appropriate for analyzing how intent is conveyed through utterances. The aim of this research is to determine the types of illocutionary acts utterances by Neal, to determine the types of perlocutionary acts utterances by Thom and Joey, and analyze perlocutionary effects successful, or unsuccessful after the speech acts are uttered. This research uses theory of Searle (1979) for categorizing illocutionary acts, Searle (1969) for categorizing perlocutionary acts, and Austin (1962) for identifying the effect of perlocutionary acts. This research uses descriptive qualitative method to find the result. The results show that Neal uses 5 types of illocutionary acts which are representative, directive, expressive, commissive, and declaration. Meanwhile, Thom and Joey us 3 types of perlocutionary acts including verbal perlocutionary, non-verbal perlocutionary, and verbal-nonverbal perlocutionary. Moreover, the perlocutionary effect is said to be successful in line with the speaker’s intention, since out of the 10 data analyzed, there are 8 successful mostly accomplish the expected communicative purpose.
