Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of teaching technique called information transfer technique in teaching listening comprehension on dialogue to Year-7 students of SMP Negeri 2 Mempawah Hilir in Academic Year 2012/2013. It was a pre-experimental study in one group pretest posttest design. The data were collected by using audio file with the written test in form of table, total of the test items were 8 and then analyzed by using ES (Effect Size) formula. The sample was VIIA class that consisted of 36 students. The finding showed that the effect size of treatment was 0.89 (ES > 0.80) and categorized as high with the mean score of the students’ 74.65. This mean score after the teaching (post-test) increased if compared with the mean score before the teaching (pre-test) 61.45. The difference score between pre-test and post-test was 13.20. Key words: Information Transfer, Listening Comprehension. Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki keefektifan dari penggunaan teknik pengajaran yang disebut Information Transfer, dalam pemahaman menyimak dialog terhadap siswa-siswi kelas VII SMP Negeri 2 Mempawah Hilir tahun ajaran 2012/2013. Penelitian ini menggunakan pre-eksperimen studi dengan disain satu grup pre-test post-test. Data penelitian didapatkan dengan menggunakan audio file besertakan tes tertulis dalam bentuk tabel, dengan jumlah soal 8 dan kemudian dianalisa dengan menggunakan rumus ES (tingkat efektifitas). Sampel penelitian diambil dari 1 kelas (VIIA) yang terdiri dari 36 siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ukuran keefektifan dari perlakuan adalah 0.89 (ES>0.80) dan dikategorikan tinggi dengan nilai rata-rata siswa 74.65. Nilai rata-rata setelah pengajaran (post-test) tersebut menunjukkan perubahan yang meningkat jika dibandingkan dengan nilai rata-rata siswa sebelum pengajaran (pre-test) 61.45. Perbedaan nilai yang ditunjukkan antara nilai pre-test dan post-test adalah 13.20. Kata kunci: Transfer Informasi, Pemahaman Menyimak.

Abstract

Abstract: The purposes of this research are to investigate teacher’s perceptions regarding their understanding on CLT principles, their perceived challenges in adapting CLT in their classrooms, and if there is a discrepancy between their perceptions toward CLT principles and their actual teaching practices. The context of this research was the English teachers in 44 different Junior High Schools in Mempawah district. This research is survey with descriptive quantitative in nature. The data was collected through a combination of questionnaires and classroom observation checklists. Based on the data which was gathered from the questionnaire and classroom observations, it was indicated that the teachers mostly had a good understanding about CLT principles. Unfortunately, they did not practice all of CLT principles in their teaching classroom. It was also found that most of the teachers deal with the perceived challenges. The major challenges they encounter were English skills proficiency, lack of training in CLT, a large size class and students’ low English proficiency. Keywords: Teachers’ perceptions, teaching practices, communicative language teaching. Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menginvestigasi persepsi guru tentang pemahaman terhadap prinsip-prinsip CLT, tantangan yang mereka hadapi dalam mengaplikasikan CLT di kelas; dan apakah ada kesenjangan antara persepsi terhadap CLT dengan kegiatan mengajar mereka di dalam kelas. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan kepada guru mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris di 44 SMP di Kabupaten Mempawah. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian survey berbentuk  kuantitatif kuantitatif. Data di kumpulkan dengan menggunakan kuesioner dan ceklis obervasi kelas. Berdasarkan data yang di peroleh dari kuesioner dan obervasi kelas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa hampir semua guru memahami prinsip-prinsip CLT dengan sangat baik. Namun, di dalam pelaksanaan mengajar mereka, tidak semua prinsip-prinsip CLT mereka terapkan. Berdasarkan data, dapat juga disimpulkan bahwa mereka berhadapan dengan tantangan-tantangan yang dirasakan. Tantangan terbesar yang mereka hadapi ialah minimnya kemampuan Bahasa Inggris mereka, kurangnya pelatihan tentang CLT, jumlah siswa yang besar, dan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris murid yang rendah. Kata kunci: Persepsi guru, praktik mengajar, pengajaran bahasa komunikatif

Abstract

Despite the changes in language teaching approach from years ago until this day, it seems that students’ low capability to use English communicatively has been a crucial issue for most EFL students. Thus, this phenomenon still encourages educators and researchers to keep on searching for a language teaching approach that can be called as a perfect approach. In the search of socalled perfect language teaching approach, there have been many teaching approaches such as grammar-translation method, audio lingual method, and communicative language teaching that have been used and implemented by teachers/educators around the world. Even until today, those teaching approaches are still considered as teachers’ / scholars’ favorite. Then, in the early 2000, Scott Thornbury presented his own innovation of a teaching approach that called Dogme approach. He emphasized that teaching language is not as effective as before because most of teachers, nowadays, have been strictly attached to course books or textbooks in their teaching that makes the main goal to set up a real communicative atmosphere among learners is not achieved. He claims that in a classroom, there should be only teacher and learners. Then, this paper aims to describe about what is Dogme in ELT, its application, its criticism and the possibility to use this approach in Indonesian context.
