Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the needs and learning requirements of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) students in the context of developing a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) model for ESP speaking skills. The research employed a qualitative approach, utilizing Comprehensive Needs Analysis (CNA) techniques. Data was collected through document analysis, Forum Group Discussions (FGDs) with students, interviews with lecturers, and meetings with experts. Data analysis followed qualitative methodologies, including data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The study reveals significant insights into students' backgrounds, English proficiency levels, and experiences with MOOCs. Participants primarily perceive their English proficiency as intermediate. While MOOCs are viewed as valuable supplementary resources, students desire more diversity and interactivity in their online learning experiences. Furthermore, the research highlights students' desires for comprehensive speaking skills development, integrated learning experiences, supportive learning environments, and user-friendly technology platforms. This study fills a gap in the literature by investigating the specific needs and learning requirements of ESP students for developing an ESP Speaking MOOC model, particularly in Indonesian context. The findings suggest the importance of prioritizing speaking skills, integrating various language skills, fostering supportive learning environments, and leveraging user-friendly technology platforms in the development of ESP Speaking MOOC models. Addressing these needs is crucial for maximizing learning outcomes and student engagement in online language learning environments.

Abstract

Framed in Design Based Research (DBR), the authors investigated the target needs and learning needs of the students in developing their English skills at a Marine Hotel Course Institution in Indonesia and developed the appropriate English learning materials for the students. The subjects of the research were 14 students of a Marine Hotel Course Institution in Indonesia. The instruments used in this study were Questionnaires, Field Notes, and Interview Guidelines. The data of this research were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The research findings show that the appropriate English learning materials for the students should be Authentic and consist of three parts: Introduction, Main Activities, and Reinforcement. It shows that the appropriate tasks for the students have six components: goals, input, activity, setting, student role, and teacher role. Based on the research findings, each unit consists of two cycles i.e. oral cycle for listening and speaking skills and written cycle for reading and writing skills. The materials provide language function in the oral cycle, grammar in the written cycle, and pronunciation and vocabulary lessons in both cycles. From the results of the materials evaluation, the mean values of the statements were 3.86 to 4.77. Based on the quantitative data conversion from 0-5, those ranges were in the good and very good categories. Those data were supported by the data from the interview and the observation. It can be concluded that the suggested materials were appropriate and the students were satisfied in using the designed materials.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the English for Green Economy Program, designed to empower pre-elderly and elderly learners through English education integrated with sustainability and entrepreneurship. The program aimed to develop participants’ language competence, eco-literacy, and entrepreneurial awareness within the framework of lifelong learning. A mixed-method descriptive–evaluative design was employed, involving twenty participants aged 45–70 who were active in community-based environmental and entrepreneurial groups. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire consisting of four sections: program evaluation, trainer performance, training benefits, and participant feedback. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, while qualitative comments were thematically interpreted. The overall results indicated strong positive perceptions, with 61% of all responses rated “Strongly Agree” and the remaining 39% “Agree.” Specifically, 95% of participants confirmed the program’s relevance, 80% highly valued the trainer’s performance, and 75% reported enhanced skills applicable to daily and entrepreneurial contexts. Qualitative feedback emphasized extending the duration and focusing on one topic per session to deepen understanding. These findings demonstrate that English language education, when contextually linked with sustainability and entrepreneurship, can effectively promote empowerment, environmental awareness, and lifelong learning among elderly communities.
