Abstract

The paper presents an analysis of Joko Pinurbo’s “Tuhan Datang Malam Ini” translated into“God Came Tonight”. In this paper, the translation of the original version is seen closely tosee its equivalence strategies, referring to Nida’s framework, applied to the production of thetranslation. The equivalence explained in the discussion covers both formal and dynamic. Thediscussion in the paper leads to three major conclusions, namely: (1) figurativeness in a poemcan be preserved by the help of formal equivalence, (2) the type of equivalence depends onhow far translators bring it to the translation, and (3) translators need to have broadknowledge to supply their work in translation, especially in that of poetry.Keywords: Joko Pinurbo, Nida’s framework, formal, and dynamic equivalence.

Abstract

Gavin Eugene Long was a gunman who did a mass shooting in Baton Rouge in 2016. Before he was dead, a suicide note was left. The suicide note was a potential proof to investigate the deeds he wanted to convey before he was dead. Such phenomenal note deserves to be contested as the case for the present study. Therefore, this study aims at  understanding the note as seen through from forensic linguistic point of view. To understand the note, Forensic Linguistic (FL) study is required to do since suicide note is in the domain of it. Since FL relies upon linguistic analysis, Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) framework is applied. In the framework, ideational metafunction is chosen to be observed. The results of the observation show that the transitivity processes employed in the note reflect the deeds Long wanted to convey in relation to the mass shooting he did. Abstract

This paper aims to see the word formation processes in the fashion terms proposed by UK Vogue’s website. There are twenty six terminologies listed from A to Z. The terminologies became the data of the analysis in this paper. Each of the terminology was paid attention closely to identify the processes in the termilogies. The results show that fashion terms that are specifically listed on UK Vogue’s website implement five kinds of processes: 1) eponym, 2) borrowing, 3) compunding, 4) affixation, and 5) multiple processes or combination of previously mentioned processes. Out of those processes, borrowing processes are commonly used in forming fashion terms. Thus, it can be inferred that the formation of fashion terms are linked to the language that contributes more words in the fashion terminology vocabulary.
