Abstract

One specimen of Bodianus izuensis Araga and Yoshino, 1975, and three specimens of B. masudai Araga and Yoshino, 1975, were obtained from fish markets in Bitung and Kema, Minahasa, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, between Marchâ??July 2009. The specimens were caught from depths of about 20â??30 m at coral reef ecosystem around Lembeh Island and Kema. This is the first record of these species in Indonesian waters. Morphological features, diagnostic characters, and distribution are discussed and illustrated, and color photographs of the species are presented.

Abstract

Eight specimens of Meganthias kingyo were collected from Bitung, North Sulawesi, Indonesia between 2008 - 2010. The specimens were caught from about 70-150 m off Lembeh Island. M. kingyo differs from M. natalensis by having the following characteristics: pores lateral line scales (43 vs. 49); pectoral rays (16 vs. ii.14); body depth (47.1 vs. 51.9); head length (31.0 vs. 38.2), body depth (47.1 vs. 52.9), caudal peduncle depth (12.1 vs. 14.2), pectoral fin length (28.0 vs. 34.3), pelvic fin length (33.6 vs. 31.1), anal fin base length (19.4 vs. 22.2), caudal fin length (66.9 vs. 35.3) and longest dorsal fin ray (48.5 vs. 27.4). Previously, this species has been reported from Houzan-sone, off Miyako and Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa, Japan; and herein is recorded from off Lembeh Island, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Abstract

Three specimens of Plectranthias retrofasciatus Fourmanoir and Randall, 1979 and one specimen of P. randalli Fourmanoir and Rivaton, 1980 were collected by first author from fish market, Bitung, North Sulawesi on June and September 2010. The specimens were deposited at LBRC-F, the reference collection of LIPI Bitung, Technical Implementation Unit for Marine Biota Conservation, Research Centre for Oceanography, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Bitung, Indonesia. Plectranthias retrofasciatus is closely related to P. megalophthalmus and P. knappi, in sharing some morphological characters as snout length and interorbital width, while P. randalli differs to other species by having a moderate deep body proportion. Initially these species known only from New Caledonia for P. retrofasciatus and Chesterfield Islands and southern Taiwan for P. randalli respectively. The two species of anthiine fishes collected from Bitung, Indonesia bringing the total number of species of this genus known in Indonesia to six.

Abstract

Three specimens of Eurypegasus draconis Linnaeus, 1766 were collected in seagrass beds of Samama Island, East Kalimantan, in June 2006. It was the first record of this uncommon species that widely distributes in Indian and Pacific waters. The species was characterized by 8-9 tail rings and a spine on the dorsal side of last tail ring.

Abstract

Two specimens of Cantherhines multilineatus were collected from Girian Fish Market, Bitung, North Sulawesi on January 7 and August 18, 2009. It was caught from depths of about 20–30 m in association with other coral reef fishes. In the world, this species is found in many scattered locations in the Western Indian Ocean, Eastern Indian Ocean, Northwest Pacific and Western Central Pacific and its distribution was reported from Taiwan and Japan.
