Abstract

Abstract

Various previous studies believe that through its inherently applicable nature, health communication research can ideally be easily applied to health practices and policies. On the other hand, several criticisms have emerged that point to the lack of role of communication scholars in responding to various needs in the health context, including in handling pandemics. This research aims to get an overview of the trends in health communication research produced during the COVID-19 pandemic (response to recovery period) in Indonesia. Through mapping these trends, it will be known whether or not there is a contribution made to practice and policy in handling the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. This research was conducted using the quantitative content analysis method on journal articles that have been published in SINTA-accredited communication journals in the last 3 years (from early 2020 to early 2022). In addition, in-depth interviews were also conducted with 2 communication scholars who focus on the development of health communication studies in Indonesia and medical professionals who are directly involved in public relations for the COVID-19 task force to obtain an overview of the relationship between health communication research and the handling of the covid-19 pandemic. The results of this study show that the trend of health communication research is in line with the views of medical professionals who see that health communication is only limited to instruments. Policy making on health communication is still emphasized on the medical role alone so the space for health communication to become one of the contributors to policy making is getting narrower. On the other hand, the role of health communication is very pronounced in the personal aspect, especially in seeing the local wisdom of the community in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, so that it is not trapped in general standardization.

Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic is one of the health crises that demand effective communication and timely, accurate, and culturally sensitive communication to reach coordinated and more effective responses. Regarding this function, communicative leadership becomes critical in reaching the success of a health crisis, particularly among local communities which are frequently associated with resistance towards health initiatives. This research is intended to explore the communicative leadership performed by local leaders in managing covid-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022. To meet this aim, the present study employed interviews with 6 local leaders in Kabupaten Pasuruan, Jawa Timur as informants. This research revealed that in responding health crisis due to covid-19 pandemic, leadership involved communication to construct and negotiate meaning through shared narratives about covid-19. This leadership had been performed to help communities in the sense-making process about the pandemic through a series of strategies comprising (1) operating religious frame and local values to construct a shared reality about covid-19 pandemic and how to respond to it, (2) providing narratives as the evidence, (3) performing openness, presence and empathy. This research also found that maintaining sustainable coordination with the authorities is performed by local leaders to assure communities about the pandemic response plan, thus, community involvement in covid-19 measures could be developed easily. This study confirmed some previous research highlighting the importance of faith-based organizations (FBOs) in communication intervention in the health context and research on the importance of narrative to persuade people to adopt new health behaviours.

Abstract

The study aims to map rural communities’ attitudes and acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine, examine the sources of information they rely on, and analyze the communication networks formed among vaccine-resistant groups. Findings reveal a balance between digital and conventional information sources in accessing COVID-19-related information, supported by sufficient human resources and infrastructure in certain areas. Social media and television emerge as the dominant sources of vaccine-related information, indicating high exposure to media content. Meanwhile, healthcare workers, health cadres, and government institutions serve as secondary sources of information. Notably, word-of-mouth remains a significant channel for spreading misinformation, contributing to high acceptance of hoax messages and reinforcing vaccine resistance within the rural community of Tawangsari.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Several studies have been conducted to explore some practices of ritual communication in various traditions in Indonesia. However, those studies have not analysed the historical dimension of the ritual. The aim of this research is to explore the shared meaning about Tarian Seblang in the Olehsari people’s, Banyuwangi through ritual communication lens. Furthermore, the study also is conducted to reveal modified practices in Tarian Seblang which has been performed since Hindu era. Through an ethnographical study, the result of this study shows that Tarian Seblang is interpreted as an expressing gratitude to God, as an act to preventing some disaster and plagues, also as an honour to the ancestors. In the historical dimensions, this research reveals some modified practices within the ritual according to the cultural practices in Hindu era, Islamic era and the contemporary era. Some cultural practices also indicate the acculturation between Hindu values and Islamic values. The promotional efforts toward Tarian Seblang organized by the local government are considered to diminish the sacred value of this ritual.
