Abstract

Background: Flatfoot is is a postural deformity relating to the collapse or flattening of the medial longitudinal arch. It often appears with symptoms and varying degrees of deformity and disability. Flatfoot can be influenced by two factors; internal and external factors. The purpose of this study is to estimate the correlation between age, sex and body mass index (BMI) with the prevalence of flatfoot in primary school children in Laweyan. Methods: This study was an analytic observational study with cross sectional approach. A sample of 285 subjects was obtained through the sample size calculation with the research formula for the proportion of one group. The subjects were 68 students of SDIT Insan Mulia and 217 students of SDIT Nur Hidayah which obtained by stratified random sampling. Inked foot print test and Chippaux Smirak Index were used to identify the flatfoot. Result: There were 172 people (60.4%) experienced flatfoot with the highest number at age 7 years (67.9%) and there was no association between age and flatfoot (p>0.05). The prevalence of flatfoot was higher in male than female and 78.7% of obese children had flatfoot with p<0.05. The prevalence of flatfoot grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3 were 82%, 11%, and 6,4% respectively. Conclusion: There was correlation between gender and BMI with flatfoot, but there was no correlation between age and flatfoot. The association between flatfoot and BMI does not mean BMI is a contributing factor to the occurrence of flatfott in children.

Abstract

Introduction: Flatfoot is one of musculoskeletal deformities in the foot that is commonly seen in children. Previous study found that children with flatfoot have balance differences during standing as well as fatigue compared with children with normal feet that are associated with falling. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between flatfoot and static balance in children with flatfoot.Method: This was a cross sectional study design with purposive sampling data. The total sample was 16. Children were assessed using Chippaux-Smirak Index (CSI). The one-legged stance balance was used to assess static balance. Spearman correlation was conducted to examine the relationship between flatfoot and static balance in children. Results: The mean age of the participants was 7.94 years old in which they tend to have a second degree of flatfoot. There were significant differences in static balance between eyes open and eyes close in which the subject can maintain their balance longer while eyes open. However, there was no correlation between flatfoot and static balance in children. Conclusion: Flatfoot in school-aged children affects the balance performance where visual input plays an important role, even though there was no correlation between flatfoot and balance ability.

Abstract

Athletes who experience chronic ankle instability (CAI) will have a disturbance in balance that affects the accuracy of kicking the ball toward the goal. The Kinesio taping and wobble board exercise intervention can significantly improve balance, however, its effect on increasing shooting accuracy was not yet known. This study aimed to investigate the effect of kinesiotaping and wooble board exercise in increasing shooting accuracy of football players with CAI. This was an experimental study with one group pretest-postest design. A total of 7 samples were determined using the purposive sampling technique to receive Kinesio taping (KT) and wobble board exercise (WB). The kicking accuracy test was used before and after intervention to evaluate kicking accuracy. This study found that there was a significant difference in shooting accuracy score before and after intervention indicating that the intervention increased shooting accuracy. Further research is expected to add the number of samples and pay attention to the length of experiencing CAI.
