Abstract

This research is focused on mnemonic keyword method to enhance vocabulary mastery to the university students. Mnemonic refers to instructional or learning strategies designed specifically to enhance memory. One of the most powerful mnemonic strategies is the key word method. The keyword method is a useful mnemonic aid which can help broaden students’ vocabulary by means of speech and ultimately with reading and writing. Then keyword method effective way to provide a meaningful visual image upon which to base memory for a new word's meaning. This research involves twenty students at the first grade. The research instruments of this study are consisted of tests, observation checklist, and a questionnaire. This study was class action research. From the cycle 1 reflection result, some procedures and activities were revised. Different from the cycle 2, the researcher used mnemonic keyword method and there is no reflection. The enhancement of students’ vocabulary mastery shows with individual test and got mean score 67.75 in the cycle 1 and 79.75 in the cycle 2.In addition the enhancement of students’ vocabulary mastery in group test and got mean score 72.00 in the cycle 1 and increased to be 81.00 in the cycle 2. In this result, it shows there enhancement for vocabulary mastery through mnemonic keyword method in the first grade students at STKIP PGRI Blitar.

Abstract

  Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan motivasi belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa sekolah dasar melalui pemanfaatan media audio-visual berupa watch movie. Sasaran kegiatan adalah siswa SDN 1 Ngadirejo Blitar. Metode yang digunakan meliputi observasi awal, pemutaran film berbahasa Inggris, pengenalan kosakata dan ungkapan sederhana, diskusi, serta evaluasi motivasi belajar siswa menggunakan angket. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan antusiasme, keaktifan, dan minat siswa dalam mengikuti pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Media watch movie mampu menciptakan suasana belajar yang menyenangkan dan kontekstual sehingga berdampak positif terhadap motivasi belajar siswa. Kegiatan ini diharapkan dapat menjadi alternatif strategi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang inovatif di sekolah dasar   This community service program aimed to improve elementary school students’ motivation in English Learning through the audio-visual media in the form of watch movie. The participants were students of SDN 1 Ngadirejo Blitar. The methods included initial observation, English movie screening, introduction of vocabulary and simple expressions, discussion sessions, and evaluation using a motivation questionnaire. The results indicated an increase in students’ enthusiasm, participation, and interest in learning English. The use of movie-based media created an enjoyable and contextual learning atmosphere, which positively influenced students’ learning motivation. This program is expected to serve as an alternative innovative strategy for teaching English in elementary schools.

Abstract

English is not just a language for international communication, but a key tool that connects people, knowledge and opportunities in our interconnected world. Many Indonesians, including students in early education stage, are now faced with the need to master English language for the demands of the realization of Golden Indonesia 2045. Elementary school age is considered a critical period for acquiring a second or foreign language. Framed within a descriptive qualitative method, this research investigated how small but consistent English language practices are developed in students’ daily routine recognized with their unique religious and cultural environment in a pesantren setting to enhance their English proficiency. The data of the study were collected through certain ways including classroom instructions observations, in-depth interviews with the teachers, and documentation of the students learning activities. The analysis focused on describing the implementation strategies and contextual factors that influence the success of micro habit development in an Islamic elementary boarding school. Findings indicates that micro habits-such as greetings, classroom instruction, simple conversations, vocabulary repetition- within a pesantren based elementary school contributes to students’ engagement, vocabulary acquisition, students’ motivation and confidence in using English in simple but authentic context. The integration of pesantren culture and discipline embedded in students’ daily routine also donates valuable implication in promoting early English language acquisition. This research highlights the significant role of fostering micro habits in the development of language proficiency, emphasizing how such habits can serve as a crucial educational strategy for bridging the existing gaps in students' language skills. By integrating these small, consistent practices into their routines, educators can enhance the language acquisition process, ultimately improving the overall language skills of young learners, especially in culturally diverse environments like those found in pesantren schools.
