Abstract

Complementary Feeding is food and drinks given to babies who have reached the age of 6 months and above to fulfill their nutritional needs. Therefore Complementary Feeding is only introduced to babies after they reach the age of 6 months or older. Complementary Feeding represents the transitional stage from breastfeeding to family foods gradually, both in terms of types and frequency of provision, portion sizes, and the form of food that is suitable for the age and digestive capacity of the baby. The purpose of this study is to identify the impact of counseling on MP-ASI on the knowledge and attitudes of mothers of toddlers aged 0-24 months at Nurtiana Ginting Clinic from December 2023 to March 2024. This research method uses an experimental approach with a pre-experimental design known as the one-group pretest-posttest design. In this approach, before counseling, respondents were asked to fill out questionnaires before (pretest) and after (posttest) counseling. Subsequently, the researcher compared the results of the pretest with the posttest. The research sample consisted of 38 mothers who had toddlers aged 0-24 months. Bivariate data analysis used the Wilcoxon test because the data were not normally distributed. Initially, only 5 respondents (13%) had good knowledge. However, after counseling, the number of respondents with good knowledge increased to 34 people (89%). The attitudes of mothers before counseling showed that 11 respondents (29%) had good attitudes, while after counseling, the number of respondents with good attitudes increased to 32 people (84%). The results of bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon test showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho) and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant influence on the knowledge and attitudes of mothers of toddlers after counseling. These findings indicate that nutrition counseling is effective in carving positive changes in the knowledge and attitudes of mothers of toddlers. The implication of this research is the need for broader and more focused nutrition counseling programs to support the health and nutrition of toddlers.

Abstract

high incidence of stunting. Stunting is a chronic condition that can be seen from stunted growth due to malnutrition that occurs over a long period of time. Currently, the incidence of stunting in children under five is around 162 million. If this incident continues, it is estimated that by 2025 there will be an additional number of children experiencing stunting, namely around 127 million children. Therefore, it is necessary to provide counseling to mothers of toddlers regarding what factors can cause stunting to be able to anticipate that their children will experience stunting. The purpose of this community service activity (PKM) is to identify how knowledgeable mothers are about the impact of stunting on toddlers. This activity was carried out in November for 2 days by distributing questionnaires before and after counseling which aimed to find out mother's knowledge about the impact of stunting on toddlers. The results of the PKM showed that before the counseling activities were carried out, the majority of the knowledge of mothers under five was in the sufficient category, namely 46.4% and after the extension activities, the majority of knowledge of mothers under five was good, namely 71.4%. It is recommended that mothers and families pay attention to the growth and development of their children and provide adequate nutrition to meet the nutritional intake of children, so that the incidence of stunting in children under five can be avoided and the growth and development of children. develop perfectly and become the next generation of intelligent nation.

Abstract

One of the frequently encountered health issues, particularly among pregnant women, is hypertension. Hypertension during pregnancy poses a serious risk to the health of both the pregnant woman and the fetus. This issue requires special attention, especially in providing information to the public about alternative approaches to managing blood pressure. To address this problem, an educational campaign on the benefits of cape gooseberry for hypertensive pregnant women was conducted. Cape gooseberry, scientifically known as Physalis angulata, holds the potential in helping to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive individuals. Compounds found within the cape gooseberry, such as flavonoids and polyphenols, possess anti-hypertensive properties that could benefit health. Several studies indicate that cape gooseberry can lower blood pressure. The Community Engagement Activity (PKM) was held in Lau Rakit Village, STM. Hilir Sub-district, Deli Serdang Regency, on November 29th, 2023, involving 15 participants. The primary aim of this PKM is to enhance public knowledge, particularly among hypertensive pregnant women, regarding the benefits of cape gooseberry in reducing blood pressure and the appropriate methods of consumption. Additionally, this activity aims to raise awareness about the significance of nutrition in maintaining health during pregnancy. The educational campaign succeeded in increasing public knowledge about the benefits of cape gooseberry in reducing blood pressure. Positive responses were evident through active participation among the community in seeking further information regarding cape gooseberry and its consumption. It is anticipated that this educational campaign will serve as a foundation in the endeavor to manage community health, particularly concerning hypertension during pregnancy.

Abstract

Breast milk dams are a common problem often experienced by postpartum mothers, which if not treated properly can cause pain, infection and obstacles in the breastfeeding process. One method that is known to be effective in preventing breast milk dams is by applying warm water compresses. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the level of knowledge of postpartum mothers regarding giving warm water compresses and preventing breast milk dams. This study used a cross-sectional design involving 60 postpartum mothers at the Juliana Clinic, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Data was collected through a questionnaire that measured the mother's level of knowledge about warm water compresses and the incidence of breast milk dams. The results showed that the majority of mothers had sufficient (41.7%) and good (33.3%) knowledge about warm water compresses, while 25% of mothers had insufficient knowledge. As many as 58.3% of mothers did not experience breast milk dams, while the other 41.7% experienced breast milk dams. The results of the chi-square test showed that there was a significant relationship between postpartum mothers' knowledge about warm water compresses and prevention of breast milk dams (p-value < 0.05). Mothers with good knowledge experience breast milk dams less often than mothers who have less knowledge. In conclusion, good knowledge about warm water compresses has proven effective in preventing breast milk dams. More intensive education and counseling for postpartum mothers is needed to increase their knowledge about appropriate breast care techniques to prevent lactation problems.

Abstract

Maternal and infant mortality remain significant public health challenges in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas where awareness and access to healthcare are limited. This community service aimed to improve pregnant women’s understanding of the importance of antenatal care (ANC) as a preventive measure to enhance maternal and child well-being. The program was conducted at Klinik Pratama Rawat Inap Mars Deli Serdang and involved 35 pregnant women. Education was delivered through direct counseling sessions that included materials on ANC visit schedules, early detection of pregnancy complications, nutrition, and birth preparedness. Pre- and post-tests were used to evaluate changes in knowledge and attitudes. The results show a marked increase in the participants’ understanding of ANC, with a rise in knowledge from 40% to 88% after the session. Participants expressed greater motivation to attend routine ANC visits and actively engaged in discussions. The findings suggest that community-based education significantly enhances awareness and fosters positive behavioral change regarding ANC compliance. Collaboration between healthcare professionals, clinics, and academic institutions is crucial to sustain and expand such initiatives for long-term maternal and child health improvement.
