Abstract

Things Fall Apart is a novel potrays the background of traditional life and primitive culture Ibo tribe in Umuofia, Nigeria, Africa and also the impact of European colonialism towards Africans’ society in the early 19th century. The research applies the qualitative method and it supported by the sociology of literature approach. The primary data are taken from the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Based on the analysis the researcher conducts, the impact of European colonialism in Africa which not only brings a positive impacts but also negative legacy. There are several points of the impact European colonialism in Africa : existence of christianity, existence of language, establishment regulation and contribution to development.

Abstract

This research studies about the motivation of the main character who chooses to leave his family for free and peaceful life. The objectives of this research is unraveling and exploring McCandless motivation in the movie “into the wild” directed by Sean Penn. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with the type of content analysis study. In this cas, psychological analysis is employed. The data are collected through observing the script of the film and take notes. The result of this research shows that there are intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and also there are five types broader motivation that classified into physiological needs, safety needs, love belongingness needs, esteem needs and self-actualization.  Keywords: Film, Main Character, Motivation, Psychology

Abstract

This research aims to describe Christian Grey's personality in the novel “Fifty Shades of Grey” by E. L. James. This research uses qualitative descriptive method and Sigmund Freud's theoryin order to analyze Grey's psychological condition. The techniques of analyzing data are through three steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The researcher finds 20 data deal with Freud’s id, ego and superego. The results show that in id, there are 10 data. While in ego, there are 8 data. Whereas in superego, there are 2 data. The most dominant personality structure in his character is id. As the conclusions, Grey’s id shows that he has some strong sexual desires and aggressive urges. Grey’s ego shows that he tries to negotiate with Anastasia before having sexual activity. Whereas, Grey’s superego shows that he has a commitment as a principle in having a relationship with his partner. As the suggestions, this research is expected to provide readers with a deeper understanding to Christian Grey as the main character in the novel, to be as reference to the next researchers, and to inform people that the memory in the past may affect a person in his personality and his relationship with others.

Abstract

Background: This study analyzes the themes in 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the theme of 'Pride and Prejudice. Method: This study uses descriptive method and intrinsic approach. This research analyzes the theme, character, characterization, plot, setting, and point of view in the novel. To support this approach, the researcher applied objective theory which is based on library research, things that happen in a work are oriented to the work itself. The research data is taken from 'Pride and Prejudice. Based on the data analysis, the theme of love and arrogance of Pride and Prejudice. Results and Discussion: The result of this study is that humans generally face and feel many things in life. Everyone has feelings of love. Some people can easily express their feelings to others, but some others cannot express them because they are shy, or even become arrogant. It also happens in the love story of the characters in 'Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Conclusions and Implications: This research gives the message that; If we love someone, it should be expressed, and should not be hidden or harbored. Let us not hate someone because we will never know the feeling of hate that will make us love. Let us not be arrogant or haughty towards others as these traits will alienate us from others. Be kind to others so that by being kind to others we will be far from being called arrogant or haughty. The implication of this research is the importance of expressing feelings of love and not keeping them hidden or suppressed, as this can prevent unnecessary hatred and conflict. Hatred towards someone can turn into love, so avoiding hate is essential in maintaining harmonious relationships.
