Abstract

This study investigates how grassroots feminist networks in Java confront religious intolerance through digital activism. Amid escalating online hate speech and rising religious conservatism in Indonesia, these networks have strategically mobilized social media to construct counter-narratives that challenge patriarchal and exclusionary religious discourses. Employing digital ethnography, the research analyzed online interactions, campaign materials, and symbolic expressions across feminist platforms from 2020 to 2024. The findings reveal that these networks foster inclusive interfaith alliances and cultivate alternative safe spaces for marginalized voices—particularly women and religious minority groups. While digital platforms offer avenues for empowerment and visibility, activists also contend with backlash in the form of online harassment and ideological suppression. Although the study is limited to digital data and lacks offline ethnographic immersion, it offers original insights into the intersections of gender, religion, and digital resistance in Southeast Asia. It contributes to the growing literature on feminist digital activism and underscores the need for comparative, cross-platform research in future studies.

Abstract

Abstract

This article reexamines Islamic peace traditions by analyzing how prophetic mediation operates within key conflict narratives. The study responds to the limited theorization of prophetic conflict-resolution practices and the fragmented approaches found in previous works. Using discourse analysis, the research identifies consistent relational, procedural, and normative patterns that reveal an underlying logic in the Prophet's approach to managing disputes. Four significant findings emerge: the systematic under-theorization of prophetic mediation, methodological inconsistencies in earlier studies, recurring narrative structures that sustain interpretive coherence, and the feasibility of formulating a conceptual model grounded in these patterns. The study demonstrates that prophetic mediation is not merely moral guidance but a structured set of conflict-intervention strategies that can inform contemporary peace building. This work advances the field by providing a stronger analytical foundation for developing a practical model of prophetic mediation for modern contexts. The study also opens pathways for future research to operationalize the model and test its applicability across diverse conflict settings.

Abstract

This research addresses religious and community diversity to prevent exclusive religious expression in multireligious communities in Mojokerto, East Java, especially in Pohjejer Village. The village has a diverse social and religious background, with the majority of the population adhering to Islam, but there are also small groups of followers of other religions. The informants in this study consisted of 15 individuals selected purposively, including religious leaders, community leaders, members of religious organisations, and villagers involved in daily interfaith interactions. They were selected based on their central role in the social and religious dynamics of the village and their influence on the existing diversity. This study identifies factors that can trigger exclusive religious expression and provides insights into how interactions between religious communities can be managed to minimise potential conflicts. The findings show that an inclusive approach, interfaith education, and interfaith dialogue are key to maintaining harmony. The new contribution of this study is an emphasis on the importance of a more holistic understanding of social interaction in the context of Indonesia’s heterogeneous Islamic society, which can be an essential reference in Islamic studies related to the management of diversity in regions with similar characteristics.
