Abstract

The emergence of todayâ??s role of English as an international language (EIL) and as a global lingua franca (ELF) makes English language education important in many countries. In Indonesia, for example, it has been growing a number of schools ranging from kindergarten to university level which use English as the medium of instructions.Every subject in school curriculum has different objectives including English subject. But some students donot realize that, learning English is really important in their life. It makes them unmotivated in learning English. Lack of learnersâ?? motivation is believed as one of the primary problems of English language teaching, many of them take it as a difficult lesson to learn. As a result, they skip class, and when they attend the class, it is not because they want to learn English but likely because they fear of failure. Moreover, lots of them may lack of attention during class, chatting with classmates, doodling in their note books or gasp in their textbooks. This present study aims at discovering the factors that influence the studentsâ?? achievement in English language learning by using linguistic and Al-Qurâ??an theory. The conclusion of the study is the factors that influence the studentsâ?? achievement in English language learning are the studentsâ?? intelligence, motivation, school facilities, policies of government and the principal, family, and environment

Abstract

In today’s era that is all about technology, social media is an important need for many people. Social media is now inherent in social circles, especially the current millennial generation. Almost all teenagers, adults and even children have social media. It is not uncommon for us to always be connected to the outside world through social media. The use of the internet through social media has presented a web forum that can form an online community. The purpose of the study is to find out the learning attitudes that can encourage students to use social media in learning in high school, as well as have a potential impact in encouraged, respectful and responsible attitudes in the use of social media as learning. The research uses a quantitative method that can be used to determine the results of research on student learning activities. The data was obtained from documents in the form of books and journals related to the theme, finally this research focused on encouraging students to social media as a form of attitude and responsibility in the world of Education. The results of these observations explain the ethics of using social media for learning in encouraging students to act respectfully and responsibly which can play an important role in encouraging the use of social media for students to be more concerned about their responsibilities. In this use, it is inseparable from an ability and a deficiency in the attitude of students if applied in learning, therefore educators and parents are very influential. The conclusion obtained from the study is that in encouraging the ethics of using social media today, social media has shown great hope in encouraging education. In this observation, the use of social media can be used as an attitude of respect and responsibility. With the use of social media, you can form good ethics to encourage mutual respect.

Abstract

The Direct Method in language teaching, which emphasizes teaching language through immersion and avoiding the use of the learner’s native language, has been widely used in educational settings for over a century. Its focus on oral communication, everyday vocabulary, and inductive grammar teaching has made it a popular approach. However, debates about its effectiveness compared to more modern teaching methods have persisted, particularly in terms of long-term language acquisition and proficiency. This literature review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Direct Method by analyzing studies conducted across various educational contexts. The review examines how this method impacts learners’ speaking, listening, and overall communicative competence. By synthesizing both qualitative and quantitative research, the study provides a comprehensive view of the strengths and limitations of the Direct Method. The findings indicate that while the Direct Method improves oral proficiency and listening skills in the short term, it may not be as effective for developing reading and writing skills. Studies show that the method fosters greater student engagement and motivation but may not adequately address the complexities of advanced grammar and academic language. Furthermore, the method’s effectiveness depends heavily on the teacher’s skill in creating immersive language environments. In conclusion, the Direct Method offers valuable benefits for beginner and intermediate learners, especially in communicative aspects of language. However, it requires supplementation with other approaches to develop comprehensive language proficiency. Future research should explore ways to integrate the Direct Method with more advanced instructional techniques for a balanced approach to language teaching.

Abstract

This research focused on the application of short movies as a media in improving speaking ability at eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Palu. The researcher applied quasi experimental research design which involved two classes of students, they were experimental class and control class. The instruments of data collection were pretest and posttest. The pretest was used to measure prior knowledge of the students and the posttest was used to measure the development of the students’ knowledge after the treatment. The t-test was analyzed to compare the mean scores of both classes. There is a significant difference score of the experimental class (1940) and the control class (1490). The level of significance was set up at 0.05 with 58 degree of freedom (df=29+31-2=58). The result of data analysis indicates that tcounted(6.84) is higher than ttable (2.002). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. Thus, the use of short movies can improve students’ speaking ability at eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Palu.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the availability of library accessibility for disabled library users and the challenges faced by librarians in serving disabled library users at the UPT Library of Tadulako University. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research, with the research location at the UPT Library of Tadulako University. Data were obtained from primary and secondary data sources through data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation, which were then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and data verification. The results of the research show that accessibility for disabled library users at the UPT Library of Tadulako University is already available with adequate access for wheelchair users, accessible entrance doors, tables, and easily reachable shelves. However, the toilets still do not meet the standards set by the IFLA Checklist. In addition, the service provided by librarians to deaf library users is still limited to written communication because there are no librarians who are able to use sign language. Based on the research findings, it is recommended that library management add librarians who have special expertise in serving disabled library users, especially for deaf library users. In addition, it is also necessary to add adequate accessibility facilities and infrastructure for disabled library users, following the development of the campus that is becoming an inclusive campus. It is hoped that the results of this research can contribute to improving the quality of library accessibility for disabled library users at the UPT Library of Tadulako University. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi ketersediaan aksesibilitas perpustakaan bagi pemustaka difabel dan kendala-kendala yang dihadapi oleh pustakawan dalam melayani pemustaka difabel di UPT Perpustakaan Universitas Tadulako. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif, dengan lokasi penelitian di UPT Perpustakaan Universitas Tadulako. Data diperoleh dari sumber data primer dan sekunder melalui teknik pengumpulan data seperti observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi, yang kemudian dianalisis melalui reduksi data, penyajian data, dan verifikasi data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aksesibilitas bagi pemustaka difabel di UPT Perpustakaan Universitas Tadulako sudah tersedia dengan akses jalan yang memadai bagi pengguna kursi roda, pintu masuk, meja, dan rak yang mudah dijangkau. Namun, toilet masih belum memenuhi standar yang ditetapkan oleh IFLA Checklist. Selain itu, pelayanan yang diberikan oleh pustakawan kepada pemustaka tunarungu masih terbatas pada komunikasi tertulis karena tidak ada pustakawan yang mampu menggunakan bahasa isyarat. Berdasarkan kesimpulan penelitian, disarankan agar pengelola perpustakaan menambahkan pustakawan yang memiliki keahlian khusus dalam melayani pemustaka difabel, terutama untuk pemustaka tunarungu. Selain itu, perlu juga menambahkan sarana dan prasarana aksesibilitas yang memadai bagi pemustaka difabel, mengikuti perkembangan kampus yang sedang berkembang menjadi kampus inklusi. Diharapkan hasil penelitian ini dapat memberikan kontribusi dalam meningkatkan kualitas aksesibilitas perpustakaan bagi pemustaka difabel di UPT Perpustakaan Universitas Tadulako.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of librarians' attitudes on visitors' interest in using the UPT Library of UIN Datokarama Palu. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population consisted of students who were users of the UPT Library of UIN Datokarama Palu. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 81 respondents via Google Forms and analyzed using SPSS version 25. The findings reveal that librarians' attitudes significantly influence visitors' interest. The correlation between librarians' attitudes and visitors' interest was weak (5.7%) but positive, indicating that the better the librarians’ attitudes, the higher the visitors’ interest. Hypothesis testing showed that the t-value (2.191) exceeded the t-table value (1.990), leading to the rejection of H0 and acceptance of H1. This confirms a significant effect of librarians' attitudes on visitors’ interest. The implications of this study suggest that librarians should foster positive and friendly attitudes when providing services and implement user education programs to help visitors optimize library resources. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh sikap pustakawan terhadap minat kunjung pemustaka di UPT Perpustakaan UIN Datokarama Palu. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Populasi penelitian adalah mahasiswa yang menjadi pemustaka UPT Perpustakaan UIN Datokarama Palu. Data dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner yang disebarkan kepada 81 responden menggunakan Google Form dan dianalisis dengan bantuan SPSS versi 25. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sikap pustakawan berpengaruh signifikan terhadap minat kunjung pemustaka. Nilai korelasi antara sikap pustakawan dan minat kunjung pemustaka tergolong lemah (5,7%) tetapi positif, yang berarti semakin baik sikap pustakawan, maka semakin tinggi pula minat kunjung pemustaka. Uji hipotesis memperlihatkan bahwa thitung (2,191) lebih besar dari ttabel (1,990), sehingga H0 ditolak dan H1 diterima. Temuan ini menegaskan adanya pengaruh signifikan sikap pustakawan terhadap minat kunjung pemustaka. Implikasi penelitian ini adalah pentingnya pustakawan untuk mengembangkan sikap positif dan ramah dalam pelayanan serta melaksanakan program pendidikan pemakai guna membantu pemustaka memanfaatkan layanan perpustakaan secara optimal.
