Abstract

Translation technology has now been acknowledged as a subdomain of translation studies (Christensen, Flanagan, and Schjoldager, 2017). The researches on translation technology cover a lot of aspects of translation as well as the technology that is used to aid the process. This research is focused on the latter, especially on the results of the Human-aided Machine Translation (HAMT). The HAMT which becomes the focus of this research are Youtube’s Automated Translation and Google Translate (AT and GT respectively). The aim of this research is to evaluate the HAMTs, identify the problems, and propose a possible solution for the problems. This research is using a realism approach because it uses the translator students’ perspective of the HAMT, and the use of corpora. Questionnaires and experiments will be given and performed to assess and to formulate the solutions. Keywords:  HAMT, GT, AT, realism, corpora

Abstract

The goal of this research is to design a marking scheme to aid on the assessment translation quality. The research will start with the analysis on the element of the text which will be the focus of the assessment as determined by House (2001). The elements which will be analyzed are taken from both Source Language (SL) and Target Language (TL). The data gathered will then be compared. The comparison is aimed to determine the most influential factors in the rendering of texts. Afterwards, the factors will be put together in a scheme and graded or marked in accordance to the needs of the assessment in the classroom. The expected result will hopefully be able to be used by professionals and amateurs assessors.

Abstract

The pandemic is not over yet; Therefore, teaching and learning English with an online platform is still preferable. Like any other medium of instruction, an online platform has its challenges and problems, particularly in teaching English to lower-level adult learners. Shumin (1997) has mentioned several factors influencing the development of adult learners’ speaking abilities. They are age, sociocultural factors, emotions, self-esteem, empathy, anxiety, attitude, and motivation. In relation to online learning, Altakhaineh, Alhendi, Dweikat (2021) state that the problems faced by students and educators are similar. They are time management, teaching methods, lack of encouragement and motivation, and lack of knowledge regarding online teaching tools. This research, therefore, aims to investigate the specific challenges and problems of teaching English to lower-level students through Zoom in the Indonesian context. This research is unique because the class is participated by people from three areas in Indonesia. Since they come from different areas, the facilities and access that they have and can make use of will vary. The research will start with a pre-test. Then, the teaching/research will start from late October 2022 to early February 2023. The result of this research is to identify the specific challenges and problems of online teaching English to low-level adult learners and the method/s used/can be used to overcome them. Abstract

Vocational learning in Indonesia at the upper secondary level provides a large portion of improving English language skills. Besides being used as a compulsory subject/college in schools and universities, English lessons are studied in the context of vocational education to bridge the world of education with the needs of industry and the workforce on a national, multinational, and international scale. The high need for a competent workforce, which can be seen from the ability to speak English, presents a variety of specific subjects in line with this condition. The subject variant in question is business English or 'business English'. Referring to this condition and examining the need for vocational education, Community Service activities (ABDIMAS) are carried out with the theme 'Introduction to Business English'. ABDIMAS is held at the Almakiyah Vocational High School (SMK) in East Jakarta. ABDIMAS was carried out in response to the needs of partners who felt that the English learning materials did not meet the needs of students and graduates who were required to be absorbed in the world of work. ABDIMAS is carried out through three sessions of a hybrid online and offline enrichment program for students. Each session is taught about what aspects are included in business English and linguistic aspects commonly used in business and work contexts. This activity is oriented towards increasing the knowledge and insight of the participants regarding (i) business conversations, (ii) formal and informal expressions in business communication, (iii) basics of email writing. The activity ends with an evaluation that broadly shows that the activities are carried out in line with the work context so that they do not focus on the theoretical and implementation levels.
