Abstract

Patient’s chief complaint: A 1-week-old female infant with bilateral cleft lip and palate was referred to the Department of Prosthodontic, Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital. Her parents provided informed consent prior to her treatment. Her nutrition was managed through a nasogastric tube (NGT). The patient was in primary need of appliance that could support her feeding. Patient’s oral status: Intraoral examination revealed bilateral complete cleft lip and palate deformity diagnosed as bilateral complete labiognatopalatoschizis. Treatment plan: Fabrication of NAM to reduce the severity of the initial cleft deformity and to achieve better and more stable results in cleft lip and palate infants, in particularly advantageous to lengthen the deficient columella prior to the primary surgical repair of the lip and nose. Details of the therapy: Preliminary impression were done at the first appointment using custom tray and elastomeric impression material. At 2 weeks after birth, a conventional molding plate was fabricated on the maxillary cast obtained by preliminary impression. After the NAM was completed, try in was performed on the patient's mouth and adjustment were made to the edges of the NAM. Summary: Nasolalveolar molding (NAM) allows an overall improvement in functional activity thus increasing infant’s weight prior to surgery, also correct the aesthetics of the nasolabial complex in bilateral cleft conditions while minimizing the extent of the surgery and the overallnumber of surgical procedures.

Abstract

Patient Chief Complaint: A 20-year-old male patient was referred to Prosthodontic Department Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital, Makassar with disfiguration of the face as chief complaint. Medical history revealed a significant trauma to the left eye 6 months ago which had been thereafter eviscerated. Patient has never used prosthetic eye afterwards. Patient Status: Examination of the left eye socket revealed a healthy conjunctiva covering the posterior wall of the anophthalmic socket with synchronous motions and absence of infection or inflammation signs. Sulcus depth was sufficient to retain prosthetic eye. Treatment Plan: Rehabilitation of the ocular defect with customized acrylic-based ocular prosthesis to increase patient’s appearance and to prevent further shrinkage of the eye socket. Details of Therapy: Preliminary impression was done using customized tray fabricated from modelling wax and hydrocolloid irreversible impression material. An intraocular custom tray for secondary impression was fabricated with acrylic resin and modified with a syringe that attached to the custom tray. Secondary impression of the defect was recorded using polyvinyl siloxane light viscosity material followed by wax pattern fabrication using modelling wax. The wax pattern was tried in patient’s socket and checked for size, comfort, support, fullness, and then packed with tooth colored heat cure acrylic resin. After determining the location and diameter of the iris with an optical vernier pupillary distance ruler, the color of sclera was determined by shade guide and confirmed with technician using digital photo. Ocular prosthesis was fabricated afterwards and inserted into the eye socket and evaluated for suitability, aesthetic, and movements with the contralateral eye. Clinical Significance: Customized ocular prosthesis was significantly more aesthetic than pre-fabricated one with better contouring, color matching, and coordinated movements with the contralateral eye. This prosthetic approach may restore patient’s appearance, thus increase their self-esteem, and improve the quality of life.

Abstract

Object: To find out the VDO measurement with digital photo analysis method using Apikal analysis software, which help to measure VDO directly based on patient’s photograph. Methods: The samples are 15 patients, with condition of missing all teeth in the upper and lower jaws for at least 6 (six) months. Then measurements of vertical dimension of occlusion were made using Apikal digital analysis software and the Two Dots technique as comparison. Results: Using the Kruskal Wallis test to compare the measurement of the vertical dimension of the occlusion with the Two Dots technique and Apikal software, there is no difference between the direct and indirect (digital analysis) on vertical dimension of occlusion measurements. An insignificant difference found, and the same result occur between both, with p value 0.05 (0.816*). Conclusion: There is no difference of results on measuring the vertical dimension of occlusion between the Two Dots and Apikal analysis software, and there is a significant relationship between measurements on the face using the Two Dots technique and Apikal software. Apikal analysis software can help determine and as alternative method to do the measurement of vertical dimension of occlusion in patient indirectly

Abstract

Background: Denture cleaning materials on the market are available in several forms, one of which is effervescent tablets. Brown algae effervescent granules (Sargassum sp) have been demonstrated in several studies as denture cleansers but it has not been proven whether these materials affect the surface roughness of acrylic resins. Purpose: Analyzing the effect of effervescent Sargassum sp and alkaline peroxide as a soaking agent on the surface roughness of acrylic resin plates. Methods: This research is a laboratory experimental study with 27 samples of acrylic resin plates divided into three groups. Group A was immersed in effervescent granules. Group B was immersed in alkaline peroxide (sodium perborate) and group C was immersed in distilled water. Immersion was carried out for 15 minutes per day and lasted for 4 consecutive days and every day each solution was replaced with a new one. Measurement of surface roughness of samples after immersion using a surface roughness tester hardness measurement using CLSM (Confocal Laser Scan Microscopy). Result: Wilcoxon's test on the Alkaline Peroxide group showed a p value of 0.008 (p 0.05 (0.285 and 0.447) which means that there is no significant difference in surface roughness values before and after immersion. Conclusion: Sargassum sp effervescent granule solution does not affect the surface roughness of the acrylic plate.

Abstract

In the field of restorative dentistry, dental implants are very popular. There are two options for implant permanent crown restora-tion, screwed or cemented. Bone loss around the implant that occurs after one year of prostheses placement is one of the indica-tors for assessing treatment success. This article examines the marginal bone loss rates of both types of implant-supported pros-theses by collecting several internet-based literatures using the keywords marginal bone loss of implant screwed and implant ce-mented. The rate of bone loss is one of the assessments of the success of edentulous treatment using implants. There are seve-ral factors that impact bone loss around the implant. In screw implant prostheses marginal bone loss can be greater due to greater non-axial transfer of occlusal load and can be exacerbated if the implant is placed in an area that received a bone graft. It was concluded that greater marginal bone loss occurs with screw implant prostheses, but in terms of strength, screw implant pros-theses are better than cementation implant prostheses.

Abstract

Objective: A successful denture should have dimensional stability in order to enhance chewing efficiency, increase patient’s comfort, and prevent injury to the oral tissue. However, fracture of acrylic denture base is occasionally an avoidable complication because the mechanical properties of acrylic resin may not be sufficient to withstand masticatory stress. This case report describes the step-by-step fabrication of a maxillary metal based complete dentureMethods: A 58-year-old female patient arrived at Dental Hospital Hasanuddin University with complaints of impaired appearance and difficulty chewing due to the loss of all maxillary and mandibular teeth. Previously, the patient had worn dentures twice. First, in 2012 using full maxillary dentures for 3 years. Second, in 2016 there were more dentures full of maxillary and mandibular prostheses because the denture before were broken. But, the dentures are rarely used because they are loose. The patient feels uncomfortable and wants to make dentures. The treatment stage: clinical and radiographic examination, preliminary and finally impression, manufacturing of maxillary metal bases, manufacturing of bite rim, determination of vertical dimensions, arranging the artificial teeth, try-in denture, insertion and control.Results: The treatment is the manufacture of a maxillary acrylic complete denture with a metal framework base and a acrylic complete denture for the mandibular, gived more comfortable and retentive.Conclusion: Metal bases for complete dentures has been used successfully and provide many advantages over the more commonly used acrylic resin. With metal bases in dentures, the patient benefits by having a more comfortable, better fitting and stronger prosthesis.

Abstract

Objective: Phthisis bulbi is an eye condition that happens when a wound heals slowly because of a severe eye injury, inflammation, or neoplasm. It is an end-stage eye disease that causes the eyeball and the contents inside the eye to shrink and become disorganized. Eye-related disfigurement can cause a lot of physical and emotional trouble. Instead of surgery like enucleation or evisceration, prosthetic rehabilitation of the remaining eyeball is the most effective treatment for the phthisis bulbi. Rehabilitation of these patients is challenging, and a multidisciplinary approach is needed to make an ocular prosthesis that works well.Methods: A 25-year-old male patient presented to the department of Prosthodontics at Hasanuddin University Dental Hospital with the chief complaint of vision loss in his left eye and an unattractive appearance due to a bulging white spot regressing eyeball. The patient previously used a contact lens but was satisfied with the results. The treatment plan involves the fabrication of a custom-made acrylic resin eye prosthesis. Custom ocular prostheses are created using impression techniques that provide retention benefits.Results: After twenty-four hours, one week, and six months after implantation, follow-up appointments revealed no inflammation and excellent adaptation of the ocular prosthesis. Conclusion: The custom-made ocular prosthesis presented in this case can be used to give the phthisis bulbi patient a more natural appearance. Using a custom ocular prosthesis with the proper size, color, and color can yield an acceptable aesthetic result

Abstract

Objects : The purpose of this case report is to restore healthy tooth function with compromised tooth replacement so that patients are more confident and chew food well, a good choice of denture selection methods are good for patients with loss of one anterior maxillary tooth with adhesive bridge denture treatment and choice of removable partial denture metal frames as an alternative solution to the replacement of mandibular posterior teeth.Methods : A 65 years old female patient came to Dental Hospital Hasanuddin University with complaints of a loose maxillary partial denture complaining and difficulty chewing food because her posterior teeth had been removed +/- 7 years ago and her anterior teeth were removed about +/- 5 years ago. Want to replace the old removable partial denture with fixed denture for maxillary anterior teeth and also want to make a partial denture metal frames for mandibular teeth.Results : The case of loss of one maxillary anterior tooth was successful with the treatment of adhesive bridge dentures and the use of a removable partial denture metal frames a more stable and retentive mandibular posterior tooth loss that showed a better prognosis.Conclusion : Use of adhesive bridge dentures for maxillary anterior teeth and partial dentures metal frames for posterior mandibular teeth provides satisfaction for patients because it can overcome aesthetic problems and improve good phonetic and masticatory functions.

Abstract

Objective: Overdenture with retained precision attachment helps in distribution of masticatory forces, minimize trauma to abutments and soft tissue, minimize the ridge resorption, improve the esthetics and maintain the proprioception. When it is difficult to find a suitable path of insertion because unparallel abutment teeth, telescopic crown indicated.Methods: A 66-years-old female patient visited Dental Hospital Hasanuddin University with mastication and aesthetic problems so that she wanted to make a denture. Patient had missing teeth as in 35 36 37 45 46 and 47, indicated for the fabrication of overdenture with telescopic crown in teeth 34 38 44 and 48. Fabrication of telescopic crown began by making of study model with preliminary bite record. Full crown preparation has done on teeth 34 38 44 and 48, and impression for fabrication of primer coping and metal framework with double impression technique. Primary coping has cemented on the abutment teeth, then reimpression. Secondary coping soldered with base metal framework denture was tried in the patient. Next, the determination of DVO, artificial teeth was arranged and tried to the patient, next processed the denture with acrylic and inserted it. Results: Precision attachment that used in this case is a telescopic crown, which consists of 2 types of crowns, the primary crown that is permanently attached to the supporting tooth, and the secondary crown attached to the denture. Conclusion: Many studies have done, and can concluded that telescopic overdenture is a unique and retentive type of prosthodontic treatment.
