Abstract

This  study  discusses  the  use  of  the  cooperative  principles  and  the conversational  implicatures  in  Nurfadli  Mursyid’s  Tahilalats  comic. Tahilalats is one comedy comic in Line Webtoon. The comic contains four panels in each episode, and its stories concern social phenomena. However, the readers said that Tahilalats comic was difficult to understand. This was the reason the writer conducted this study, which was an analysis of the use of the cooperative principle in Tahilalats comic. The study aimed at finding the  forms  of  conversational  implicature  and  describing  the  functions  of conversational  implicature  in  the  comic.  This  study  was  focused  on  30 episodes of the comic, and to collect the data the writer used simak and catat techniques  (Sudaryanto,  1993).  The  results  are  related  to  the  cooperative principle and the conversational implicature. The violation or compliance of the cooperative principles can describe the implicatures in the conversation. The uses of both produce humorous effects because these potentially lead the reader to misunderstand the comic when reading explicitly. However, reading the comic further, the reader will understand the implicit meanings.

Abstract

The study aims to improve students’ communicative speaking and motivation using the simple code theory. It was action research. The research procedure consisted of identifying the students’ problems, designing the plans, applying the classroom practice expression (suitable with simple code), observing, and reflecting on each cycle. The subject was 20 students who have the lowest mark in communicative speaking ability and motivation in the pre-observation. Data were collected through observation, tests, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation and were analyzed using the descriptive quantitative, and qualitative. The English Simple Code could improve students’ communicative speaking ability and motivation in grade VIII of SMP Yapis Biak. it is also supported by the result of speaking tests and questionnaires. There are some findings; 1) implementing the classroom practice expression can help the teacher to provide a simpler language for students; 2) teacher-talk and interlanguage-talk are useful for acquiring English at the low-intermediate level; 3) emphasizing the activities of repetition drill and acting from a script can provide a prefabricated routine to prefabricated pattern and develop their fluency simultaneously; 4) teacher‘s role can improve the communicative speaking in performance; 5) delayed feedback is very useful to encourage students’ low affective filter in the learning process, so they got the high confidence and motivation in the second language acquisition. Thus, Theoretically, the English simple code can provide a good contribution to learning strategy in the classroom. Then, the teacher can use classroom practice expression, various activities, and delayed feedback to acquire English as the target language.

Abstract

The impact of age on language learning is often explained by various factors such as neural mechanisms, biological influences, and learning conditions. This study is a literature review that aims to analyze age influences based on various sources, including journals, books, and proceedings. The study argues that there is a cognitive mechanism known as the language defense mechanism that acts as a barrier to maintain the integrity of L1 information, leading to challenges in acquiring L2 for adults. This defense mechanism strengthens as L1 knowledge increases, making it more difficult to learn L2. The concept of the defense mechanism provides another perspective on models such as fossilization, language interference, the impact of age, and bilingualism in the context of learning new languages.

Abstract

Manga, or Japanese comics, have garnered immense popularity in Indonesia, appealing to readers of all ages with their diverse fictional narratives. Across genres like action, romance, comedy, and supernatural, manga portrays a myriad of characters and scenarios, from lone male protagonists to shy girls exploring romantic dynamics. Yet, amidst its widespread appeal, manga often depicts female characters as mere sexual objects, sparking scholarly inquiry into their representation. Through Roland Barthes’ semiotic lens, researchers dissect the portrayal of women in various manga genres, uncovering prevalent ideologies. While women exude body confidence, they are frequently subjected to sexual exploitation by male characters, ranging from intimate gestures to harassment. This pervasive depiction reinforces the objectification of women, normalizing harmful behaviors within manga narratives, prompting critical examination of gender dynamics in popular culture.

Abstract

This study examines the use of language markers in digital communication among Generation Z in Indonesia, focusing on their functions and socio-cultural implications. Using a qualitative approach, the research analyzed data from document observations, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions. Data analysis involved four stages: data reduction, contextual analysis, triangulation, and interpretation. The findings show that markers like “so,” “then,” “maybe,” and “I guess” serve functions such as enhancing politeness, clarifying messages, and fostering familiarity. These markers also reflect globalization’s influence, cultural values of politeness and inclusiveness, and Generation Z’s digital norms. The study illustrates how linguistic choices shape social identity, highlighting language markers’ role in effective communication. The results offer valuable insights into Generation Z’s communication practices and implications for cross-cultural and intergenerational dialogue in digital spaces
