Abstract

English rules are occasionally restricted, for instance, -ing form. This form is acquired in the early stage of natural acceptance and whether the earliest will guarantee ESL students to understand and compose it easily. This research is designated to investigate errors, sources of errors, and error tendencies made by students in composing –ing form. This research was carried out at UAD University in the English Department. Writing essay test was utilized to diagnose the tendency of –ing form misconception. Erroneous data were identified and categorized based on surface structure taxonomies and communication effect taxonomies. The findings prove that –ing form construction is not that easy for students to compose. Misformation frequenly appears due to some inappropriate formulation, mainly when students are asked to compose the –ing form as the constituent of phrase or clause, the direct object of certain verbs, and object of preposition with a particle of preposition to. The main factor affecting the deviation is caused by the distinct linguistic system of both English and Indonesian. The lack of knowledge towards the target language or incomplete instruction additionally makes students over-generalize every aspect of English rule which is occasionally restricted.

Abstract

The impact of age on language learning is often explained by various factors such as neural mechanisms, biological influences, and learning conditions. This study is a literature review that aims to analyze age influences based on various sources, including journals, books, and proceedings. The study argues that there is a cognitive mechanism known as the language defense mechanism that acts as a barrier to maintain the integrity of L1 information, leading to challenges in acquiring L2 for adults. This defense mechanism strengthens as L1 knowledge increases, making it more difficult to learn L2. The concept of the defense mechanism provides another perspective on models such as fossilization, language interference, the impact of age, and bilingualism in the context of learning new languages.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of five types of love objects as conceptualised in Erich Fromm’s theory—love for others, maternal love, erotic love, self-love, and love for God—in Andrea Hirata’s novel “Ayah”. Employing a qualitative literary psychology approach with content analysis techniques, the study identified and analysed 38 instances that illustrate various forms of love. The findings reveal the predominance of love for others and erotic love in shaping character dynamics and driving the narrative. The character Sabari emerges as a symbol of transcendental love characterised by sacrifice and sincerity. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the values of love depicted in the novel reflect the complexity of Indonesian emotional and cultural expressions. Theoretically, this study contributes by broadening the understanding of the concept of love in Indonesian literature through Fromm’s framework, whilst reinforcing the pertinence of literary psychology in the analysis of local fiction.

Abstract

Lexical density is often overlooked by authors of textbooks for foreign learners of the Indonesian language. However, the level of lexical density significantly influences the accessibility of reading materials for their intended audience. As developers of language teaching materials, particularly for the Indonesian language, lexical density must be considered to ensure the appropriateness of instructional materials at the appropriate level. Taking this issue into account, this study aims to evaluate the extent of lexical density in the instructional materials designed for teaching Indonesian to foreign learners, developed by the APPBIPA Central Sulawesi, at the BIPA 1 level or equivalent to CEFR level A1. To address this question, descriptive research with content analysis was conducted by analyzing the reading texts found in the textbook using the lexical density formula developed by Ure, and identifying the content word classes and their functions. Among the ten units analyzed, there were 36 reading texts that indicated that the ongoing development of this book still maintains a high level of lexical density, reaching 64.13%. This high lexical density is attributed to the differences in linguistic systems and the content of the instructional materials, which generally have a density in the range of 50-60%. This research shows that Indonesian language textbooks for non-native speakers still have high lexical density for beginner levels. Therefore, adjustments are needed based on the level and learning goals of the current BIPA curriculum.

Abstract

This study examines the use of language markers in digital communication among Generation Z in Indonesia, focusing on their functions and socio-cultural implications. Using a qualitative approach, the research analyzed data from document observations, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions. Data analysis involved four stages: data reduction, contextual analysis, triangulation, and interpretation. The findings show that markers like “so,” “then,” “maybe,” and “I guess” serve functions such as enhancing politeness, clarifying messages, and fostering familiarity. These markers also reflect globalization’s influence, cultural values of politeness and inclusiveness, and Generation Z’s digital norms. The study illustrates how linguistic choices shape social identity, highlighting language markers’ role in effective communication. The results offer valuable insights into Generation Z’s communication practices and implications for cross-cultural and intergenerational dialogue in digital spaces
