Abstract

This  study  discusses  the  use  of  the  cooperative  principles  and  the conversational  implicatures  in  Nurfadli  Mursyid’s  Tahilalats  comic. Tahilalats is one comedy comic in Line Webtoon. The comic contains four panels in each episode, and its stories concern social phenomena. However, the readers said that Tahilalats comic was difficult to understand. This was the reason the writer conducted this study, which was an analysis of the use of the cooperative principle in Tahilalats comic. The study aimed at finding the  forms  of  conversational  implicature  and  describing  the  functions  of conversational  implicature  in  the  comic.  This  study  was  focused  on  30 episodes of the comic, and to collect the data the writer used simak and catat techniques  (Sudaryanto,  1993).  The  results  are  related  to  the  cooperative principle and the conversational implicature. The violation or compliance of the cooperative principles can describe the implicatures in the conversation. The uses of both produce humorous effects because these potentially lead the reader to misunderstand the comic when reading explicitly. However, reading the comic further, the reader will understand the implicit meanings.

Abstract

Indonesia has many Malay speakers and it spreads to Papua with the influence of Ambon and Indonesian becomes one of the variations in the Papuan Malay dialect. Papuan itself is the home of 275 languages that are 218 non-Austronesian or Papuan (79%) and 57 languages are Austronesian (21%) (Lewis et al. 2013 cited in Kludge, 2014). Moreover, the influence of Ambon and the North Moluccan Malay, and Indonesia played an important role especially in the formation of Papuan Malay (Paauw, 2008). Papuan Malay language is spoken by the inhabitants of the West Papua and uses as the daily language (Kludge, 2014). The formation of Papuan Malay has the uniqueness because it uses deletion some syllables but does not have the impact of the meaning. This study aims to know and explain the process of clipping word of Papuan Malay as well as their word classes. The Data come from the video of MOB Papua.  Besides that, the method used in this study is a Padan method with comparing other langue. Therefore, this study appears the history and role of Papuan Malay and compare the Indonesian with Papua Malay to find the clipping word process in Papuan Malay.

Abstract

The present research is designed to investigate the attitudes of EFL Learner concerning corrective feedback. This research additionally analyses students’ characteristics that tend to receive offline or online corrective feedback and analyses the approach of sending feedback adjusted to learners’ exact needs. 75 research respondents were enrolled from Biak’s High School of Law, Papua. The researchers handed out questionnaires directly to the 5th and 7th semester students during lectures. There were eight questions provided for students to choose regarding corrective feedback. The findings of this research indicate that online or offline corrective feedback is very important for students because it can help students determine the correct linguistic form. Most students feel that corrective feedback is quite helpful for them because it can encourage students’ desire to learn. In addition, they also feel that corrective feedback can improve the learning process. However, some students feel that they are not serious enough when receiving teacher’s feedback because they have not been able to realize which ones can hinder or improve the language learning process. It seems clear that most students like feedback both offline and online. Thus, the results of this research generally confirm that students feel corrective feedback provides benefits in improving the learning process.

Abstract

The impact of age on language learning is often explained by various factors such as neural mechanisms, biological influences, and learning conditions. This study is a literature review that aims to analyze age influences based on various sources, including journals, books, and proceedings. The study argues that there is a cognitive mechanism known as the language defense mechanism that acts as a barrier to maintain the integrity of L1 information, leading to challenges in acquiring L2 for adults. This defense mechanism strengthens as L1 knowledge increases, making it more difficult to learn L2. The concept of the defense mechanism provides another perspective on models such as fossilization, language interference, the impact of age, and bilingualism in the context of learning new languages.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of five types of love objects as conceptualised in Erich Fromm’s theory—love for others, maternal love, erotic love, self-love, and love for God—in Andrea Hirata’s novel “Ayah”. Employing a qualitative literary psychology approach with content analysis techniques, the study identified and analysed 38 instances that illustrate various forms of love. The findings reveal the predominance of love for others and erotic love in shaping character dynamics and driving the narrative. The character Sabari emerges as a symbol of transcendental love characterised by sacrifice and sincerity. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the values of love depicted in the novel reflect the complexity of Indonesian emotional and cultural expressions. Theoretically, this study contributes by broadening the understanding of the concept of love in Indonesian literature through Fromm’s framework, whilst reinforcing the pertinence of literary psychology in the analysis of local fiction.
