Abstract

Adolescence is a transition period from childhood to adulthood. The post-Covid-19 pandemic has brought significant changes to the lifestyle of adolescents in Indonesia, especially in the use of social media. New habits of adolescents include playing online games and communicating through social media. This study aimed to identify emotional and mental problems in adolescents amidst the massive use of social media among adolescents. The design of this study was cross-sectional. The participants involved were 417 junior high school students aged (12-15) years. SDQ was used to identify students' emotional mentality. Participants who filled out the SDQ were 45.3% female and 54.7% male students with an average age of 13.64 years; ±0.17. Almost all students use social media, such as WhatsApp (98.8%), TikTok (92.6%), and Instagram (79.1%). Emotional problems (22.1%), conduct problems (62.4%), peer problems (27.3%), and hyperactivity (9.6%) showed abnormal categories. This finding aligns with the abnormal prosocial ability of (54.4%). Overall, participants in the normal category were 32.4%. The screening results showed that the emotional and mental well-being of junior high school adolescents was quite concerning and required follow-up to improve students' prosocial abilities. Assessments with other instruments are needed for comparison.

Abstract

Introduction: Middle adolescents are closer to their peers as part of their search for identity, so they are easily influenced by social trends, including the use of social media. High intensity of use can trigger fear of missing out (FoMO). FoMO encourages negative social comparisons that lead to decreased self-esteem, especially when adolescents feel that their lives are less ideal than others. This has an impact on the mental health, self-confidence, and social relations of adolescents. This study aims to determine the relationship between FoMO and self-esteem in middle adolescents at Senior High School 2 of Jember. Method: This research uses a correlational quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was total sampling, totaling 1083 students. The instruments used were the FoMOs questionnaire and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately with the Kendall Tau-c correlation test. Results: Bivariate analysis shows the value of ρ = 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant relationship between fear of missing out (FoMO) and self-esteem in middle adolescents at Senior High School 2 of Jember with a negative correlation direction. Conclusions: FoMO triggers a decrease in self-esteem in middle adolescents through upward social comparison of ideal content on social media. The important role of families, schools, and health workers, especially nurses, in helping teenagers manage stress due to FoMO, strengthen self-regulation, and increase self-esteem through digital education and emotional support.

Abstract

Background: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric condition characterized by recurrent mood episodes that significantly impair psychosocial functioning and quality of life. Alongside pharmacological treatment, psychoeducation is recognized as an essential non-pharmacological intervention that enhances illness awareness, supports self-management, improves medication adherence, and facilitates early detection of relapse warning signs.Aim: This literature review aims to examine the effectiveness of psychoeducational therapy in the management of bipolar disorder, focusing on relapse prevention, medication adherence, emotional stability, and quality of life.Methods: A literature review was conducted using studies published between 2020 and 2024 and retrieved from Google Scholar and PubMed databases. The search utilized keywords such as “psychoeducational non-pharmacological therapy” and “bipolar disorder.” Included studies comprised randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, cohort studies, and systematic reviews.Results: The findings indicate that psychoeducation plays a significant role in improving both clinical and psychosocial outcomes in individuals with BD. Psychoeducational interventions consistently reduced relapse rates, improved medication adherence, enhanced emotional stability, and strengthened patients’ and families’ coping abilities. Family-based and culturally adapted approaches further increased treatment engagement and reduced caregiver burden.Conclusion: Psychoeducation is a vital adjunct to pharmacological treatment in bipolar disorder management, contributing to sustained symptom control and improved quality of life.
