Abstract

Abstract: Besides as decorative flower and its benefit in hair growing, hibiscus flower (Hibiscus rosa sinensis L.) is also known for its antibacterial role. This study was aimed to obtain the inhibitory and killing potencies of hibiscus flower extract against Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. This was a laboratory experimental study. Extract of hibiscus flower was obtained by using maceration technique with ethanol and then was prepared in several concentrations, as follows: 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The extract was tested against M. tuberculosis by using spectrophotometer to obtain its maximum inhibitory and killing potencies. The results showed that concentrations of 50%, 75%, 100% of the hibiscus extract could inhibit the growth of M. Tuberculosis. Meanwhile, only concentration of 100% of the extract could kill the bacteria. In conclusion, the extract of hibiscus flower (Hibiscus rosa sinensis L.) could inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and kill the bacteria.Keywords: Hibiscus rosa sinensis, inhibitory potency, killing potency, Mycobacterium tuberculosis Abstrak: Selain sebagai tanaman hias dan penyubur rambut, kembang sepatu (Hibiscus rosa sinensis L.) juga dikenal berefek antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan aktivitas daya hambat dan daya bunuh ekstrak ekstrak bunga kembang sepatu (Hibiscus rosa sinensis L.) terhadap bakteri Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Jenis penelitian ialah eksperimental laboratorium. Ekstrak bunga kembang sepatu diperoleh melalui cara maserasi dengan etanol. Konsentrasi ekstrak 12,5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, dan 100% diujikan terhadap bakteri M. tuberculosis dengan menggunakan alat spektrofotometer untuk mengetahui daya hambat dan daya bunuh ekstrak terhadap M. tuberculosis. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan ekstrak bunga kembang sepatu pada konsentrasi 50%, 75%, dan 100% dapat menghambat pertumbuhan M. tuberculosis dan juga dapat membunuh M. tuberculosis pada konsentrasi 100%. Simpulan penelitian ini ialah ekstrak bunga kembang sepatu (Hibiscus rosa sinensis L.) dapat menghambat pertumbuhan dan membunuh bakteri Mycobacterium tuberculosis.Kata kunci: Hibiscus rosa sinensis, daya hambat, daya bunuh, Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
