Abstract

This study was conducted to improve students writing skill using Clustering Technique at seventh grades students of SMPN 6 Singaraja. The Preliminary observation indicated that student class VII B4 of SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja had low writing competency. The subjects of this study were consisted of 36 students. To find out the result of students writing ability in writing competency using clustering technique, the writer used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of research. This study consisted of two cycles, each cycle consisted of four steps, and they were: planning, action, observation and reflection. To collect and analyze the data, the writer used the information from observation, and the students’ achievement in preliminary and evaluation to support data collected. This study showed that using clustering technique in teaching writing can improve students writing competency. The data were collected through writing evaluation. In clustering technique, the writer can use line, boxes, arrows, and circles to show relationships among the ideas. The students’ responses showed that they were interested in writing because they felt easier to write using clustering technique. The percentage of students who had passed the passing score of writing in pre-observation were 2 students (6%), in cycle I were 14 students (39%), meanwhile in cycle II were improved into 31 students (86%). It could be concluded that the implementation of Clustering technique could improve the students’ writing ability of students class VII B4 at SMP Negeri 6 Singaraja. And The writer suggested to the other English teacher to use Clustering Technique in teaching writing, because this technique helps the students organize their ideas before they start to write. Key words: Writing competency, Clustering Technique

Abstract

The general objective pursued is to describe and to relate the students’ reading anxiety, reading self-efficacy to their reading competency in the Junior High School in Singaraja. The design applied is a quantitative research. There were 96 students recruited using cluster quota sampling. The data were gathered using a reading anxiety scale, a reading self-efficacy scale, and an objective reading competency test. The obtained data were analyzed in two phases: descriptively and inferentially. The descriptions consisted of central tendency measures and dispersion. Whereas inferentially, the data were analyzed using pair-wise correlation and multiple correlation technique. The findings show that: 1) the students’ reading anxiety on higher-order-items is at high level while reading self-efficacy and reading competency on high-order-items are at the low levels; 2) the relations pair-wisely between the students’ reading anxiety and reading self-efficacy, students reading anxiety and reading competency on higher-order-items are negatively and significantly, while the students’ reading self-efficacy and reading competency on high-order-items are positively and significantly correlated; and 3) the simultaneous or multiple relationships of the reading anxiety and reading self-efficacy to the students’ reading competency is proven to be significant. Keywords: Correlation, Reading Anxiety, Competency, Self-efficacy

Abstract

The aim of this study was to prove whether the implementation of PARTS Strategy and the students’ anxiety gave a significant effect to the students’ reading competency. The study was an experimental study by applying Post test only control group design. The population was nine classes (420 students) of grade XI in SMA Negeri 5 Denpasar academic year 2012/2013, in which 2 classes were samples which were assigned into two groups, i.e. experimental group and control group, by a Multi-Stage Random Sampling. The research data were collected through questionnaire and test that were analyzed using Statistical Two-Way Anova. The results show that, first, there was  different effect in reading competency between the students who were taught by implementing PARTS strategy and those who were taught by implementing Conventional reading startegy (Sig.=0.004 <=0.05). Secondly, there was not interactional effect of PARTS strategy and  anxiety level upon the students’ reading competency at the eleventh grade students of SMA negeri 5 Denpasar (Sig.=0.966 >=0.05). In view of the results of this study, it is therefore suggested  that teachers should use PARTS Strategy as an innovative teaching strategy since the facilitation of this strategy significantly improved the students’ reading competency.
