Abstract

Despite the growing studies of Baitul Maal wa Tamwil (BMT) in Indonesia, few have empirically analyzed how BMT increases household welfare, primarily through credit for productive activities. This study aimed to analyze the impact of BMT availability in the community on household welfare. Considering that credit is targeted for productive activities, the researchers limited the respondents to farmer households and households with non-farming business activities, amounting to 4642 and 2250, respectively. Utilizing longitudinal data from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS), the analysis was conducted employing the difference-in-difference (DiD) method. The results showed that BMT's existence in the community improved farmer households' mean welfare by 1.65%. After controlling for household and community characteristics, consistent results were obtained with a small decrease in the coefficient of 1.58%. Meanwhile, households with non-farming business activities were not affected by the existence of BMT in their community. Nevertheless, a positive coefficient of diff-in-diff indicated that BMT and welfare had a positive relationship even though it was not strong enough to be a contributor to the outcome.

Abstract

Despite the study of rapid growth of online-based transactions in East Java over the past few years, little is focused on the demand side in which consumer characteristics are crucial in this event. This study aims to analyze the relationship of consumer characteristics on the expansion of online-based transactions in East Java. Panel data consisting of 38 districts/cities in East Java province in the period 2015-2017 is analyzed using the random effects method. The results show that the increase of tertiary education participation has a significant positive effect on digital transactions both for goods/service transaction and the use of banking facilities. In addition, mobile phones ownership also has a significant positive role in improving online transactions for the sale and purchase of goods services through the internet. Share of non-food expenditure has a positive effect on online transactions, especially for financial transactions. On the other hand, the productive age population has a negative significant effect on online buying and selling activities. Health variable insignificantly affects online transactions since the activities of transactions through the internet can be done both in healthy and unhealthy conditions. Likewise with computer ownership that does not significantly affect online transactions because people tend to use mobile phones as the transaction device. Level of expenditure does not affect online transactions because online transactions have become the lifestyle in this digital era. Thus, the internet-based transaction is no longer influenced by economic conditions. Keywords: Transactions, Online, Random Effects, Consumers. JEL: G230, G400, O330

Abstract

Purpose – This research aims to analyze the influence of foreign direct investment (FDI) on labor absorption in West Java Province. Methods – Panel data from districts/cities in West Java in the 2017-2021 period were obtained from the Central Statistics Agency. Panel data regression analysis was carried out using the fixed effects method. Findings – The results of the analysis show that FDI has no effect on labor absorption in the West Java. In this research, it was found that labor absorption was influenced by education variables and gross regional income (GRDP) variables. Implication – The impact of FDI on labor absorption cannot be overstated. However, there is a possibility that it will take a long time for foreign investment to have an effect on labor absorption. Originality – Research on foreign investment in the province with the highest level of FDI in Indonesia on employment is still very rare to find. Moreover, this research utilizes panel data which statistically has advantages compared to cross-section or time series data alone.
