Abstract

Abstract

The dawn of South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s New Southern Policy (NSP) has undeniably created drastic shifts in the region’s economic and political arena. It could be seen as South Korea’s effort to reach out to its neighbouring countries in the south through various exchanges. A study by Butsaban (2020) concludes that NSP can be considered as a foundation for Korea and a Southeast Asian nation to promote “co-prosperity and open up a wider horizon for cooperation.”  This qualitative study employs policy document analysis as an approach. The NSP is utilized as the main document for this research. The researchers examined the NSP with respect to the locus of education as presented in the document. These are then discussed in relation to the setting and background. With these findings, the researchers identified prospects as avenues to further enhance NSP through the lens of education. Analysis of the locus of education reveals how NSP is generally heading southwards in pursuit of exchange. While education is present in some mandates, these are seen to be limited and insufficient in various contexts, mainly aimed at academic exchange and training. The researchers have identified further avenues to explore in the light of NSP’s approach to education. These include education and geopolitical stability, the increasing ASEAN populace, lifelong learning, and technology transfer. These are seen to be the pressing issues faced by the ASEAN region, to which growing needs merit immediate attention.

Abstract

Having a child with a disability does not happen to all families. Parents of children with disabilities have to go through an acceptance process without a specific blueprint as parents use different coping mechanisms and are influenced by several factors. This study aims to analyze parents' acceptance process and their aspirations for their child with CWD. Seven participants were selected through snowball sampling method and underwent semi-structured in-depth interviews for data collection while the instrument used was an interview sheet. Data analysis was conducted using the interpretive phenomenology (IPA) approach which resulted in high-level themes. The results showed that the process of parental acceptance includes different internal processes that are categorized into superordinate themes namely: discovering disability, facing reality, reconstructing a new normal, dealing with the situation, making peace, hoping for a better future, and advocating for an inclusive tomorrow. It can be concluded that parents of children with disabilities (CWD) face a unique and complex process of acceptance after learning of their child's disability. The implication of this study is the importance of interventions that focus on increasing social support and adequate health facilities for families with CWD.

Abstract

This study explores the self-regulated learning (SRL) experiences of eight working students from a state universiry in Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines. The research investigates how these students perceive and practice SRL using a phenomenological approach and semi-structured interviews. Findings reveal that working students view SRL as beneficial to their learning and employ strategies such as planning, implementing learning plans, and evaluating their performance. However, they also face individual and external challenges that hinder the effective e application of SRL. The study highlights the need for educational institutions, student support services, and policymakers to foster a positive learning environment that supports the holistic and inclusive learning needs of working students. Understanding SRL among working students is crucial in the context of the Philippine education system, particularly in a blended learning setup where students must balance academic, employment, and personal responsibilities.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of culture shock among freshmen students at a Philippine state university, where education is highly valued as both a familial legacy and a personal investment. Using a phenomenological approach, the study explores the lived experiences of ten high-achieving freshmen living independently at a state university in Laguna, Philippines. Thematic analysis reveals profound academic and social challenges impacting students’ academic performance, acculturation, and overall well-being. These challenges include: (1) Navigating a new academic environment and rigor, (2) Mastering time management and navigating lifestyle adjustments, (3) Managing finances and maintaining scholarships, (4) Adapting socially and culturally, (5) Managing expectations and pressure, and (6) Challenges to psychological and emotional well-being. Furthermore, the study identifies key coping strategies employed by these students, including seeking support networks – family, friends, peers, organizations, and scholarships – and developing personal adaptive mechanisms, primarily relying on self-help. These findings highlight the multifaceted nature of culture shock and offer valuable insights for university policies aimed at supporting incoming students’ cultural and academic adjustment.

Abstract

This study investigates the narratives of contemporary romance among Filipino LGBTQ+ emerging adults, emphasizing their lived experiences, modern influences, and cultural determinants that form their relationships. A qualitative phenomenological design was employed to conduct semi-structured interviews with eight participants from a state institution in Laguna, Philippines. The findings indicated that romantic connections are crucial in identity exploration and self-affirmation. Participants characterized love as a collaboration founded on reciprocal respect, emotional intimacy, and equality, contesting established conventions and heteronormative standards. Digital platforms facilitated connections and provided safe spaces for users; nevertheless, they also engendered obstacles, including false expectations and superficial interactions. Cultural influences, including familial expectations and Catholic ideals, were substantial, offering both obstacles and avenues for growth and authenticity. This study offers insights into the interplay between identity, culture, and love; but, its limited sample size and concentration on a particular university restrict its generalizability. Future research ought to investigate many contexts, encompassing rural regions and a wider array of socioeconomic demographics, while analyzing the changing influence of technology on LGBTQ+ relationships. This study emphasizes the resilience of Filipino LGBTQ+ emerging adults and advocates for inclusive legislation and community assistance to foster acceptance and equality.

Abstract

This study analyzed the Philippine public school teachers' financial literacy challenges. The data and results were gathered through online survey questionnaires and focused group discussions conducted in the school year 2019-2020. Twelve participants contributed to the FGD, while a total of 325 teacher respondents answered the online survey questionnaires. The results showed that the majority of the public-school teachers are struggling financially. That results in a controlled and limited financial lifestyle. Moreover, teachers unconsciously practice informal debt, which causes uncontrolled debt. Without proper knowledge and education to financial literacy, borrowing money becomes a lifestyle of every teacher in the country. Based on the findings, a financial literacy program must be included in every in-service training or division-wide teachers' mass gathering. The financial literacy program may be implemented by all participating schools where the study was conducted. Future research related to financial literacy programs may be conducted in basic education, colleges, and universities following the method used in this study.

Abstract

Teacher efficacy is a critical determinant of instructional effectiveness and student outcomes, particularly in laboratory schools that serve as training hubs for educators. This study examines the factors influencing teacher efficacy in a public laboratory school, focusing on experience, professional engagement, school culture, and burnout. Using a survey research design, data were collected from 36 faculty members through structured questionnaires measuring teacher efficacy, school culture, and burnout levels. Pearson correlation and regression analysis were employed to assess the relationships among key variables. Findings indicate that perceived school culture has a significant, positive, moderate correlation with teacher efficacy, explaining 44% of its variance. Conversely, teacher burnout exhibits a significant, negative, moderate correlation with teacher efficacy, accounting for 18% of its variance. In contrast, teacher efficacy showed no significant correlation with length of service, educational attainment, research engagement, or extension involvement. These results suggest that institutional factors such as school culture and workload management play a more crucial role in shaping teacher efficacy than individual professional attributes. The study highlights the need for policies that foster a supportive school environment, reduce burnout risk, and integrate professional development initiatives to enhance teacher confidence and effectiveness.
