Abstract

Gender issues are endless issues to be studied. The increasing number of women entering the workforce makes gender issues becoming increasingly interesting to discuss. One of the films that raised the issue of gender in the workplace is The Assistant (2019). This current study aims to analyse the issue of gender oppression experienced by the main female character in the film who works in a male-dominated company, especially those related to cultural imperialism. It uses a qualitative method using dialogue as the main data. These data will be analysed using the theory of the Five Faces of Oppression by Iris M. Young. The results of this study indicate that Jane experiences cultural imperialism which is influenced by the social norms prevailing in patriarchal culture. The cultural imperialism also triggers other forms of oppression which include the marginalization of women, exploitation of labour, and the powerlessness towards male co-workers and superiors. These oppressions occurred because of Jane's status as a woman and her position as an assistant. Jane experiences oppression because social norms and practices governing gender roles in society are also still applied in the workplace. Eventually, this research reveals that tasks that are usually done by women outside of their responsibilities can be categorized as oppression in the form of cultural imperialism which can reinforce oppression in other forms. Therefore, gender awareness is needed to be able to minimize acts of oppression for women in the workplace.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the social criticism in John Lennon’s selected songs, namely “Imagine,” “Gimme Some Truth,” and “Give Peace a Chance.” The study explores how John Lennon navigated his worldview and personal experiences, shaped by the issues he faced, to create songs that serve as a form of social criticism addressing societal problems. The primary research question focuses on identifying the social criticisms embedded in John Lennon’s selected songs. By analyzing the relationship between the reasons behind the creation of these works and their intrinsic elements, such as lyrics, song structure, and diction, this research aims to uncover the depiction of social criticism in the selected songs and delve deeper into Lennon’s perspectives on social issues, politics, and human rights. The findings are expected to contribute to a better understanding of the implementation of social criticism in popular works such as songs. This research not only enhances theoretical knowledge in the field of genetic structuralism but also provides insights into the importance of critical thinking regarding social issues in society

Abstract

The research entitled The Deconstruction of Horror Film Formula in Midsommar by Ari Aster aims to figure out the deconstruction of the horror film formula in Midsommar in contrast to horror film formula in general by Brigid Cherry. The researcher used a qualitative method to analyze the data. The primary data are taken from Ari Aster's movie, Midsommar, in the form of cinematic codes such as setting, lighting, sound, and color. In addition, the researcher also used deconstruction theory in literature and cultural elements such as Scandinavian culture to analyze the deconstruction of horror film formulas in Midsommar film. The researcher found four binary oppositions of the horror film formula in Midsommar. The first one is the deconstruction of setting where Midsommar changes the common horror film formula setting of terrifying into peaceful. The second one is the deconstruction of lighting as Midsommar uses bright lighting instead of the common dark one. The third one is the deconstruction of sound as Midsommar uses dramatic sound instead of the common creepy one. Lastly, the deconstruction of color in Midsommar as it uses various colors instead of monotone ones that are commonly used in the horror film. This research illustrated the deconstruction of the horror film formula in the movie Midsommar from Brigid Cherry's common original formula by reversing the non-dominant elements into becoming the dominant elements.
