Abstract

Desv. or known as Paku Tanduk Rusa is a plant commonly used traditionally to treat cancer in North Sumatera. However, its capability against breast cancer remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of P. coronarium extract against breast cancer cell line MCF-7. In addition, the phytochemical profile of the active extract was also screened. The cytotoxicity evaluation was conducted to the fibrous roots, spores, fertile leaves and sterile leaves of P. coronarium and the extracts of which were obtained by ultrasound-assisted maceration using ethanol 70%. Their cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cell line was determined using MTT assay. The results showed that only the fibrous roots extract exhibited cytotoxic activity with an IC50 value of 427.76 ppm, while other extracts were inactive. Furthermore alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids/steroid, saponins and phenolic compounds were identified on the phytochemical screening of fibrous roots extract. Based on this study, the fibrous root extract of P. coronarium has weak cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 cell line and warrants further investigation for the search of the bioactive secondary metabolites that responsible for the cytotoxic activity. Keywords: breast cancer; cytotoxic; MCF-7; MTT-assay; Platycerium coronarium

Abstract

Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Hyperlipidemia can lead to vascular disorders affecting the heart and brain, potentially resulting in severe complications such as coronary heart disease and stroke. A range of treatment strategies are employed to manage this condition encompassing the use of drugs as well as traditional medicinal approaches. Among these, the use of medicinal plants presents a promising option which considering relatively safe owing to their natural origin and minimal risk of significant side effects, as well as their bioactive compounds. Catechin is one of secondary metabolites commonly found in plants which showed various biological activities that potential for medicinal use. The aim of this review was to provide a comprehensive review of existing literature regarding the catechin-containing plants in lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was employed to select literature obtained from reputable online databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed and Science Direct which were published from 2015 to 2025. A narrative analysis was performed to assess the selected literatures. Based on literature screening, 200 articles were identified of which 14 were selected for inclusion in the review based on predefined criteria. This study highlighted the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants containing catechins which exhibit efficacy in reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Medicinal plants may offer an effective herbal remedy for reducing cholesterol and triglyceride levels, with catechins may have a contribution to this activity.

Abstract

Jamu is one of Indonesia's traditional medicines that is widely consumed by the public. According to a national survey in 2023, nearly 50% of Indonesians use jamu for treatment or maintaining their health. Public interest in jamu has been increasing in recent years, creating more opportunities to generate new jobs. However, a major challenge is the lack of knowledge among entrepreneurs and the public about processing raw materials for jamu and developing innovative products. The purpose of this community service program is to enhance knowledge and skills in processing raw materials into innovative jamu products with high market value. The program's partners are the members of RT 15/RW 5, Tegalrejo District, Yogyakarta. A total of 52 members of RT 15/RW 5 Tegalrejo participated in this activity. The method used in this community service program is service learning, involving the UII pharmacy department and the community on the topic of traditional medicine production, including providing basic information about traditional medicine to the community and conducting preliminary tests to assess initial understanding.. It is followed by a training on making jamu products, such as instant ginger powder, beras kencur drinks, and butterfly pea flower drinks. The activity concludes with a post-test. The results show that this community service program improves understanding of traditional medicine and enhances the community's skills in producing marketable traditional medicine products, which can serve as business ideas in the traditional medicine sector.
