The Realization of Appraisal in Eulogies Given by People of Various Relationships toward John McCain Pratiwi, Dita Ayu; Rukmini, Dwi; Sutopo, Djoko

Abstract

An appraisal explains about language use on how the speakers or the writers negotiate their feeling with others or how the certain attitude is expressed in spoken or written text. The aim of this study is to identify the realization of appraisal in eulogies given by people of various relationships toward John McCain and explain the similarities and differences from those appraisals. The data are the clause of appraisals from the eulogy by George W. Bush, Meghan McCain, and Barack Obama. This study is discourse analysis and by attempting appraisal framework from Martin and White (2005) theory. The method of collecting data is documentation method. The result shows that all speakers used the appraising items of attitude, engagement and graduation. The former president George W. Bush produced 64 appraising items; her daughter Meghan produced 140 appraising items, while the former president Barack Obama produced 168 appraising items. The main similarity seems that George W. Bush and Meghan McCain are more dominant to use appraisal of attitude. Besides that, the difference show that Barack Obama is more dominant to use the feature of engagement. In the feature of attitude, all of them apply positive and negative items of un/happiness. In judgement and appreciation, the speakers do not apply the items of veracity and valuation. Besides that, all features of engagement used in their speech and dominant in the feature of disclaim. Meanwhile, the differences show that Barack Obama does not use the item of focus in appraisal of graduation. This study also gives the pedagogical implication for the language learners to use the appropriate expressions and to negotiate the feeling while doing the interaction or communication with others.

Abstract

Latar Belakang: Perilaku konsumtif merupakan tindakan membeli barang bukan untuk mencukupi kebutuhan melainkan untuk memenuhi hasrat semata, yang dilakukan secara berlebihan. Perilaku konsumtif dipengaruhi oleh faktor internal dan external, salah dua dari faktor internalal adalah konsep diri dan gaya hidup. Konsep diri adalah Cara remaja memandang, menilai, dan menggambarkan tentang dirinya secara utuh. Sedangkan gaya hidup ialah bagaimana  seseorang hidup yang bisa dilihat dari aktivitas, minat, dan opininya. Tujuan: Untuk mengetahui hubungan antara konsep diri dan gaya hidup dengan perilaku konsumtif penggunaan gadget pada remaja di madrasah aliyah nurussa’adah Jakarta Selatan tahun 2022. Metode: penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kuantitatif dengan menggunakan pendekatan Cross-Sectional melibatkan 87 Siswa/siswi  di Madrasah Aliyah Nurussa’adah Jakarta Selatan. Instrumen penelitian menggunakan kuesioner yang sudah dimodifikasi. Data hasil penelitian dianalisis dengan uji spearman rank. Hasil: hasil analisis menunjukan bahwa koefisien korelasi antara konsep diri dengan perilaku konsumtif  sebesar (- 0.261)  dengan nilai signifikansi sebesar (0.015) < α (0.05). Sedangkan hasil dari korelasi antara gaya hidup dengan perilaku konsumtif  sebesar (0.309) dengan nilai signifikansi sebesar (0.004) < α (0.05). Kesimpulan: Terdapat hubungan yang negatif dan rendah antara konsep diri dengan perilaku konsumtif penggunaan gadget pada remaja di Madrasah Aliyah Nurussa’adah Jakarta Selatan dan terdapat hubungan yang positif dan rendah antara gaya hidup dengan perilaku konsumtif penggunaan gadget pada remaja di Madrasah Aliyah Nurussa’adah Jakarta Selatan.

Abstract

The think-aloud method is a way for increasing reading comprehension. The think-aloud is a method that can help teachers in gathering student processes such as surmising and utilization of prior information. This research investigate the effectiveness of think aloud method in teaching students’ reading comprehension. Non-probability sampling was employed for choosing the learners from a state Junior High School in Garut for the quasi experimental research. The research sample consisted of 30 eight graders who were assigned to be at the experiment and control group. Through using pretest and posttest, the researcher gathered and statistically analyzed the data. The value of Sig evidences (2-tailed) is equal to 0.006 < 0.05, which means, the think-aloud method is not effective in teaching students' reading comprehension.Some practical suggestions are provided in the study
