Abstract

College students are required to complete their final thesis during their last year of study. While working on their thesis, students encounter various challenges such as finding a suitable title, limited reading sources, time constraints, and other obstacles. These challenges contribute to psychological distress among students. If students are unable to overcome distress, problems could arise, such as sleep difficulties, decreased self-esteem, neglect of self-care, and even suicidal tendencies. Hence, self-compassion is essential in overcoming psychological distress. Final year students require self-compassion to face their challenges and maintain emotional balance. This study aims to see the role of self-compassion in predicting psychological distress among final year students who are working on their thesis. The method used in this research is quantitative method. Convenience sampling was utilized to select a total of three hundred and eleven final year students for the study. Participants filled out the Self-Compassion Scale and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. Data is then analyzed by simple linear regression model. Results show that self-compassion can significantly predict psychological distress in final year students working on their thesis. Further test results revealed that there is a significant negative correlation between the five aspects of self-compassion with psychological distress. The implications of this research suggests self-compassion can serve as a coping and emotional regulation strategy for final year students working on their thesis. As a result, mental health practitioners can develop interventions based on self-compassion tailored for those students.

Abstract

College students need effective coping strategies to optimize their performance and achieve their goals. One promising approach is self-compassion, which can help students navigate the challenges of college life. Self-compassion can be influenced by daily experiences, including humour style. Humour is often seen merely as a source of entertainment, but it can significantly impact self-compassion.This study examines the relationship between different humour styles and self-compassion. A total of 245 college students from various universities across Indonesia participated, selected through a convenience sampling method. The Humour Style Questionnaire and the Skala Welas Diri were used to measure humour styles and self-compassion, respectively. To analyze how different humour styles predict self-compassion, multiple regression analysis with the enter procedure was employed. The results showed that among the four humour styles (self-enhancing, affiliative, aggressive, and self-defeating), only self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-defeating humour significantly predicted self-compassion. Self-enhancing humour had the strongest predictive power, followed by aggressive humour and then self-defeating humour.

Abstract

School counselors must have counseling self-efficacy. High self-efficacy in counseling allows school counselors to provide high-quality counseling services, increase the sense of achievement, feel more involved with work, and be confident in their ability to do counseling. Despite the importance of counseling self-efficacy for school counselors, insufficient counseling self-efficacy measurement tools in Indonesia are available. So far, one available self-efficacy measuring tool with good psychometric properties that has been adopted for various countries is the Counseling Self-estimate Inventory (COSE) instrument. However, COSE has not been adapted to the Indonesian language. Due to the rarity of self-efficacy tools for school counselors, this study aims to adapt the COSE instrument to the Indonesian language. The analysis was carried out through reliability and validity tests. The results of the adapted COSE scale into Bahasa Indonesia (for school counselors) were deemed reliable, where each dimension’s reliability is above  0,70. The validity of the adapted COSE scale used content validity with a qualitative method by conducting forward and backward translation processes.

Abstract

Completing a thesis is a key requirement for undergraduate students, but the process often presents various challenges. In response, some students engage in maladaptive behaviors such as procrastination. While traditionally viewed as detrimental, recent studies have identified a positive form of procrastination called active procrastination. This involves intentionally delaying tasks, feeling motivated under time pressure, meeting deadlines, and achieving satisfactory results. Active procrastination can serve as a productive strategy with potential benefits for undergraduates. This study explored the prevalence and levels of active procrastination among thesis-writing undergraduates. Data were collected from 298 students across universities in Indonesia using convenience sampling. The Active Procrastination Scale-Bahasa Indonesia by Purwanto and Natalya (2019) was employed to measure active procrastination. Findings revealed that thesis students generally exhibit low levels of active procrastination. Additionally, no significant gender differences were observed. The study also found significant correlations among the dimensions of active procrastination. These results suggest that promoting active procrastination may help students adopt a more adaptive approach to managing thesis-related challenges.

Abstract

Abstract

Body image is a critical aspect of adolescent development because the physical changes often trigger feelings of dissatisfaction, which increase the risk of developing a negative body image. A negative body image can lead to various adverse effects, such as feelings of inferiority, difficulty in self-acceptance, and even mental health problems. These can be mitigated by fostering a more positive body image through the practice of gratitude. High levels of gratitude can help adolescents accept their bodies better by focusing on positive aspects. Therefore, this study aims to examine the predictive role of gratitude on body image among adolescents. This quantitative study involved 455 adolescent participants aged 13-18 years residing in Indonesia. Data were collected using a non-probability sampling technique, specifically convenience sampling. The instruments used were the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS) and the Skala Bersyukur Indonesia (SBI). This study employed a correlational design with simple linear regression statistical techniques for data analysis. The research results indicate that gratitude can significantly predict body image in adolescents. Additional findings reveal a negative relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and body image. To gain a deeper understanding of these two variables, future researchers may consider external factors that can influence body image, such as social media, family, or peers.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of grit on academic stress among final-year students in Indonesia. In this study, the researcher employed a quantitative method with regression analysis. The measurement tools used were the Skala Stres Akademik and Skala Grit. The sample consisted of 297 students currently working on their theses, selected through non-probability sampling techniques. The findings show that grit significantly predicts academic stress. This indicates that grit helps students develop a more positive perception of academic stressors and serves as a psychological resource that enables them to remain diligent and resilient in facing the challenges of thesis writing. For future research, it is recommended to explore the strongest predictors or correlations between factors influencing grit and levels of grit.
