Abstract

This study examines the systematization of Al-Hikam aphorisms as presented in the Misbah Al-Dzulam, and explores Sheykh Nawawi Al-Bantani’s methodology for interpreting Al-Hikam. Utilizing a descriptive analysis method, the research focuses on the aphorisms of Al-Hikam. The sequence of Al-Hikam is a subject of two contrasting views. The first perspective suggests that despite an apparent randomness, the original sequence of Al-Hikam serves a specific purpose, with a spiritual secret underlying its arrangement. The second view argues that there is no logical connection (irtibath mantiqi) between the initial and subsequent aphorisms. The systematic organization of these aphorisms facilitates to be studied. These divergent viewpoints have led to the creation of two models for studying Al-Hikam’s aphorisms: the tahlili model and the thematic model. The findings of this study reveal that the Misbah Al-Dzulam offers a systematic and categorized approach to Al-Hikam. This approach transforms the perceived randomness of Al-Hikam into a coherent and comprehensive structure, particularly when studied thematically. The tahlili method further enhances the study by integrating language analysis with Sufistic interpretive approaches. This study suggests to include this book in the advanced learning curricula for santri or Ma’had Aly.

Abstract

In response to the absence of a module for academic writing courses in a multicultural classroom context and the problems of starting to write and finding ideas for academic writing, this research aims to develop an academic writing module that meets the teachers' and undergraduate students' needs and voices. This study employed ADDIE model of R&D carried out through some steps: need analysis, drafting, developing, implementing, and evaluating. In the steps of need analysis, students claimed that reading contributes to getting ideas and building background knowledge of a certain topic for writing. Brainstorming is another voice they proposed to solve the problems. Moreover, they believe that writing essays can be the starting point for writing journal articles. Accordingly, by considering all findings in the initial step, the products of this R&D comprise students’ and teachers’ books. The product's specific characteristics are reading preceding essay writing, brainstorming, the syllabus, the scoring rubric with a detailed description, and academic honesty. The study revealed that integrating active reading into academic writing modules can be pedagogically implemented and enhance both students’ reading and writing skills. The following studies on developing a module for other levels of education can be carried out to further contribute to reading-writing pedagogy.

Abstract

Translation frequently conveys information about culture, knowledge, and other social interactions. It is also considered from the perspective of intercultural communication access to developments in the humanities, sciences, and technologies. It is the fastest, most effective, and most efficient approach to transmitting knowledge and technology. Therefore, it is necessary to apply translation methodologies and techniques to ascertain the translator's translation ideology. The research method used in this research is the qualitative research design. This research took samples of the translation of mechanical engineering terms in Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Heat Transfer to look for techniques, methods, and ideologies used by translators to translate these terms from English into Indonesian. The data obtained were 175, with the discovery of 109 single translation techniques, 50 double translation techniques, and six triplet translation techniques. Three translation methods are applied: the literal translation method, the faithful translation method, and the semantic translation method. From the technical data and translation methods, the researcher concludes that the ideology applied by the translator is the ideology of foreignization.
