Abstract

This paper introduces Shaykh Dāwud ibn Ismā‘īl ibn Musṭafá Rūmī (also known as Bāba Dāwud or Musṭafá al-Rūmī) who was an Islamic scholar believed to have lived in Aceh sometime between 1650 and 1750 to the larger Muslim world. Shaykh Dāwud ibn Ismā‘īl ibn Musṭafá Rūmī is important for three reasons: (a) he lived during the time of the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam (16th – 17th centuries) and he was the leading student and religious caliph of ‘Abd al-Ra’ūf al-Sinkīlī (Teungku Syiah Kuala), the well-known Acehnese religious scholar; (b) his Risālat masā’il al-muhtadī li ikhwān al-muhtadī has been taught at Islamic institutions in Aceh and all around the Malay world; and (c) no scholarly works have yet been written about him, despite the striking fact that he and Teungku Syiah Kuala co-founded the Dayah Manyang Leupue educational institution, to which he subsequently remained affiliated.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i2.4441

Abstract

‘Abd al-Raḥmān al-Ẓāhir (1833-1896) was an influential, dynamic Hadhrami. He was a Muslim reformer, as well as a savvy businessman and formidable diplomat. Arriving in Aceh in 1864, he embarked on both business and political endeavors, as religious and trade experiences helped develop diplomatic ties between the locals, the Ottomans, and the European powers. Although he surrendered in 1878 to the Dutch, his activities and influence were increasingly common subjects for different colonial newspapers until the middle of the 20th century. This article re-examines al-Ẓāhir’s political role and his various interactions with Acehnese royal contends. It investigates his interactions with the Aceh court, the uleebalang, and the Dutch, as well as the socio-political environment that informed his surrender to the Dutch. Through investigations of numerous Ottoman, Dutch and indigenous sources, this article offers a glimpse into the reality of the indigenous responses to the decisions of this most trusted Hadhrami.

Abstract

This paper endeavors to give a quick view of the Ottoman manuscript (Osmanlı elyazmaları) collection at Sayyid Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas Library (SMNAL) of the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) by reviewing a published catalog. The Ottoman manuscripts, which mean texts written in the Ottoman Turkish language, were collected during the first part of the 1990s, inventoried, and cataloged during the early period of ISTAC. The collection possesses two hundred manuscripts on diverse subjects. This makes the SMNAL the most pertinent library in Southeast Asia, a place hoard of Ottoman Turkish manuscripts. This initiation of acquiring a certain number of Ottoman manuscripts by Sayyid Muhammad Naquib al-Attas which seems to have been purchased in the late decades of the twentieth century is no doubt an opening towards the path to the study of the Ottoman civilizational and intellectual eco-system among the Malay scholars and students of the Ottoman studies (Turcologists).

Abstract

This article is a preliminary study on Indonesians’ perceptions on the decline of the Ottoman Caliphate, and the rise of the Turkish Republic based on the highlights in vernacular press printed in Java and Sumatra. By scrutinizing textual discourse on the Caliphate and the Turkish Republic, this paper examined Indonesians’ views delivered in newspapers, such as Poestaka Hizboel Wathan, Medan Prijaji, Soeara Islam, Zaman Baroe, and Bintang Islam. These newspapers informed on the consecutive political changes, including a total ‘weltanschauung’ during the ruling era of Mustafa Kemal, which drew the significant attention of Indonesian readers, contradictory responses on the complexities of the developments among the intellectuals. Through qualitative methodology and content analysis, this paper gives additional contribution to the study of historical relations between Indonesia and Türkiye.

Abstract

Abstract: Islam carried main mission to improving human morals, not only teachings of monotheism and worship, but also concepts and guidelines in one's interaction as a pluralistic world citizen exemplified by Prophet Muhammad SAW. Islam recognizes differences in beliefs, cultures, traditions, races, and certain tribes, one of them is stated in Q.S Al-Hujurat: 13 about diversity. However, not everyone agrees with this point of view, emergence of various sects in Islam, such as extremism who have an exclusive, closed, and intolerant perspective also affects development of Islamic religion.It is undeniable that these intolerant, radical, and other attitudes can enter into every line of our lives, including in world of education. As one of efforts to prevent extremism/radicalism in institution of education is the integration of moderate Islamic values ​​in character building in elementary schools. One of elementary schools that has tried to integrate these values ​​is SD Anak Saleh. This study uses a qualitative approach with type of case study design. The results showed that: 1) moderate Islamic values ​​were applied in character education through Panca Character program at SD Anak Saleh. 2) The strategy is applied in learning at class (intracurricular), outside class (co-curricular) and in extracurricular activities by inculcating five characters, namely personal, social, natural, intellectual, and national character. 3) Implication of implementation of Panca Character is that most of graduates from SD Anak Saleh have moderate attitudes, such as tolerant, religious (used to carry out mandatory and sunnah worship), inclusive, social care, and love for Indonesian homeland.
