This research was aimed to analyze the language politeness in Qatari Emir’s speech and reveal the intention of its use.  The theory used in this research was Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory (1987) which relates the speech politeness with face threatening act (FTA) and classifies them into four kinds namely strategy on record without redressive action-baldly, strategy on record with redressive action-positive politeness, strategy on record with redressive action-negative politeness, and strategy off record.  The method used in this research was qualitative-descriptive.  The data analyzed in this research was Qatari Emir’s speech text on July 21, 2017 which officially sourced from the government of Qatar.  Based on the findings of this research, the writer identified 26 politeness speech with 4 on record without redressive action-baldly strategy, 5 positive politeness strategy, 14 negative politeness strategy, and 3 off-record strategy.  The numerous use of negative politeness compared with other strategies on Qatari Emir’s speech showed that Qatari Emir responded the act of its four neighboring countries by negative attitudes and negative feelings such as rejection, anger and satire yet still maintaining the relationship.  Besides, the number of positive politeness showed that Qatari Emir still considered the friendliness and closeness in its relationship with its four neighboring countries. Keywords:Politeness, Qatari Emir, speech.

Abstract

The research is based on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' political speech at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Summit on December 13, 2017 in Istanbul, Turkey containing semantic and pragmatic elements. The study aims to describe and discover the use of semantics and pragmatic speech acts used by President Mahmoud Abbas in his speech of OIC Summit 2017. This research uses qualitative method with descriptive approach. While the theory is used as a foundation in the theory of semantic relation and the theory of speech act Searle (1979). The results of this study indicate that speech acts used by President Mahmoud Abbas in his speech cannot be separated from the context of the problems faced by the Palestinians after US President Donald Trump declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Based on a speech, the authors successfully identified 44 propositions containing semantic and pragmatic elements that have been reviewed. From the findings, 35 propositions contained an act of illustrative speech and the majority of them were expressive speech acts with 19 propositions. This shows the fact that President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinians are only able to express the form of condemnation and the inability of their nation in facing the US unilateral decision. In addition, at least the declarative speech in the speech with a proposition indicates that Palestine has not been able to declare itself as an independent nation over the occupation of Israel. Keywords:Mahmoud Abbas, semantics, pragmatics, speech act.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal Korean’s perspectives on plastic surgery practices through a corpus-based text analysis of Korean online newspapers. The research used quantitative and qualitative methods to observe keywords, significant collocates, and semantic preference. The data used were 106 opinion articles about plastic surgery in Chosun Ilbo and Donga Ilbo (2010–2019). Keyword analysis shows that the most frequently used keywords are seonghyeong (189 times) and seonghyeongsusul (116 times). Analysis of significant collocates and semantic preferences revealed that plastic surgery was frequently discussed in relation to body parts, people (collocate yeoseong (women), junggukin (Chinese), hwanja (patient), gwangganggek (tourist)), country (collocate jungguk (China), hangguk (Korea)), intensity (gwadohan (excessive)), and effect (phihae (loss)), and others. Plastic surgery clinics are frequently addressed in terms of location (collocate Gangnam, Seoul), intensity (collocate daehyong (big scale)), and others. Based on the findings of this study, plastic surgery is primarily performed on local women and international patients, particularly Chinese tourists. Plastic surgery is also perceived as having a negative impact, being overdone, and causing numerous difficulties. Plastic surgery performed on foreign patients is considered as beneficial to Korean economic progress, but it should not be performed on Koreans.

Abstract

The normalization of relations between the United Arab Emirates and Israel from August to September 2020 marked a new chapter in Middle East geopolitical dynamics. Although this normalization began with hopes of Israeli-Palestinian peace through the Abraham Accords, the reality has been quite the opposite. Israeli violence against Palestinians and the construction of illegal settlements continue, sparking condemnation and rejection from various parties, including Muslims and Palestinian supporters. This research is motivated by the normalization agreement of four Arab countries with Israel in a short time span. The reason is the four Arab countries understand that this normalization agreement will receive bad perspective regarding their contribution to the struggle for Palestinian independence. Sources of data in this study came from national and international journals, as well as report data from national and international news media related to this topic. The research method used in this study is qualitative method with geopolitical approach. The theory used by the researcher is the paradigm of political realism proposed by Morgenthau and the existential theory proposed by Samuel P. Huntington. This article concludes that the motivation of Arab countries in carrying out normalization is the national interest of each country and the stability of the country and region.
