Abstract

Within the contemporary German society, there is an initiative that has been ongoing for over 25 years. This initiative is called the Stolperschwelle which is conducted to commemorate the falling victims of the Nazi. An artist named Gunter Demnig started the whole project in 1992, and in 2017 – with the support of the society – he succeeded to place the 70.000th stumbling stone (in German; Stolpersteine), a 96 mm x 96 mm x 100mm brass plaques in the pavement of the last victim’s address. At first, it was meant to remember the death of the Jewish during the Nazi era, but nowadays the stumbling stones also represent the death of the marginalized groups including the Gipsy, the homosexuals, people with physical disability, and people who are falsely accused because of their religious and political belief. In the Stolpersteine-project, anybody can show their respect for the victims of the Nazi by sponsoring a stumbling stone – its manufacture and its installation for 120 euro – dedicated to one victim. This article analyses how this Stolpersteine-project can be viewed from various perspectives by using socio-cultural, historical, and urban landscape perspectives. The study is conducted using a qualitative approach through literature review. The findings show that the main story evolving around the Stolperstein project is the death of someone, caused by extremely terrible matter. By engaging in the Stolperstein, the modern German society tries to commemorate someone’s death, even someone they do not personally know. The historical perspective looks at the difference of microhistory and macrohistory when it comes to one nation’s history. In the Stolpersteine project, people deal greatly with microhistory. Finally, the urban landscape perspective emphasizes that the construction of space can contribute to reliving the past as well as building a better understanding for a nation’s generation.

Abstract

This research investigated teachers' perceptions regarding gender representation in two government-mandated English language textbooks used in Indonesian senior high schools. This research aims to examine the perceptions of teachers as users and implementers of textbooks regarding the existence of gender bias and stereotypes. This research used a qualitative method with a case study design. The research involved 2 participants, the English teachers who teach in grades 10 and grade 11. Semi-structured interviews were used as the instrument in this research. Analysis of interview data was transcribed manually and then interpreted critically in accordance with Creswell's theory. The findings from this study showed that both teachers expressed awareness of the gender bias and stereotypes present in the textbooks they used. Male representation is more dominant than female. Female roles tend to be placed in stereotypes constructed in society. The existence of certain ideologies is also the cause of unequal gender representation in textbooks. There is a need for continuous development and improvement of textbooks in order to promote equal gender representation. The pedagogical implications of the findings in this research proposed recommendations to educational institution sectors and language policy makers to prepare and publish textbooks that support the achievement of gender equality.

Abstract

Authors of scientific articles are faced with two opposing demands: objectivity and critical evaluation when expressing reality and truth. To date, no evaluative language mapping has been performed on Indonesian scientific articles which can accurately describe an article’s degree of objectivity so that it can be used as a tool for objectivizing and negotiating truth. Using the appraisal framework, this research aims to identify and examine these two opposing orientations as they appear in Indonesian scientific articles. The qualitative approach was applied to perform in-depth analysis of interpersonal functions in scientific articles. Data in the form of Indonesian scientific articles were obtained from top ten highest impact factor journals which are accredited and indexed by the Science and Technology Index (SINTA), representing ten different scientific disciplines. Results show that the authors could not completely avoid subjectivity. However, objectivity was clearly sought through five strategies: passivation, verbalization, prioritization of verbs before explicit expressions of affect, nominalization, and prioritization of nouns before explicit expressions of affect. Using the appraisal framework, the modality theory in Indonesian (Alwi 1992), and the lexical semantic theory (Cruse 1986) as bases for data analysis, this research offers a taxonomic evaluative language map of Indonesian scientific articles. This research used the appraisal framework (Martin and White, 2005), especially the attitude and graduation system, to define boundaries while combining objective and evaluative-critical language in three parameters: (1) distance between the personal evaluation source and the evaluative item; (2) the prominence of agentivity and a person’s involvement in the actualization of events; and (3) the root meaning of evaluative lexemes.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal Korean’s perspectives on plastic surgery practices through a corpus-based text analysis of Korean online newspapers. The research used quantitative and qualitative methods to observe keywords, significant collocates, and semantic preference. The data used were 106 opinion articles about plastic surgery in Chosun Ilbo and Donga Ilbo (2010–2019). Keyword analysis shows that the most frequently used keywords are seonghyeong (189 times) and seonghyeongsusul (116 times). Analysis of significant collocates and semantic preferences revealed that plastic surgery was frequently discussed in relation to body parts, people (collocate yeoseong (women), junggukin (Chinese), hwanja (patient), gwangganggek (tourist)), country (collocate jungguk (China), hangguk (Korea)), intensity (gwadohan (excessive)), and effect (phihae (loss)), and others. Plastic surgery clinics are frequently addressed in terms of location (collocate Gangnam, Seoul), intensity (collocate daehyong (big scale)), and others. Based on the findings of this study, plastic surgery is primarily performed on local women and international patients, particularly Chinese tourists. Plastic surgery is also perceived as having a negative impact, being overdone, and causing numerous difficulties. Plastic surgery performed on foreign patients is considered as beneficial to Korean economic progress, but it should not be performed on Koreans.

Abstract

The attacks on October 7th, 2023 sparked a new wave of escalation between Israel and Palestine with global news coverage. Though there is coverage on both sides, many are calling out the Western news media for being biased in their reports. This paper explores the diction used by Deutsche Welle (DW) when reporting Palestine and Israel from December 1st to December 8th, 2023. The paper will use the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory by Norman Fairclough to process the data using a qualitative approach. The study aims to examine whether the diction used by DW journalists in their reports reflects DW’s stance of being impartial. The findings show that although DW tries its best to seem impartial, its reports are still heavily influenced by Germany’s stance in supporting Israel.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Textbook-based instruction fails to address students' actual needs, and the lack of a clear learning sequence highlights the need for a structured syllabus. This study develops an Arabic syllabus to improve instruction at Pesantren Mahasiswa X using a research and development approach.  The methods of data collection used were interviews, focus group discussion, and questionnaire with key stakeholders, including students, alumni, teachers, the principal, and the foundation. Thematic analysis of the needs analysis revealed that: 1) instruction aims to develop simple communication skills and subsequently, comprehension of Islamic texts; 2) learning levels require clear specification; and 3) instruction should initially focus on listening and speaking skills to address immediate needs. The study produced a competency-based syllabus aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) for beginner level. The syllabus includes a program description, objectives, assessments, topics, learning outcomes, linguistic competencies, activities, indicators, and learning media. This article also discusses CEFR alignment and challenges encountered in syllabus implementation. Keywords - Arabic syllabus design, competency-based syllabus, CEFR, need analysis
