Abstract

Halal food/drink is food or beverages that do not contain haram food or drink ingredients (especially pork and khamr) according to Islamic law. In Indonesia, consuming halal food is one of the essensial identities of a Muslim, which has recently been strengthened through public regulations. This strengthening of religious identity, especially among the Muslim minority, might create social distance characterized by Muslims’ limiting or avoiding contact with non-Muslims. While previous research found social distance exists in Muslim minorities towards non-Muslims, this research explains the lack of social distance among majority non-Muslims towards minority Muslims. Using mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, through survey, observations and interviews with 50 respondents in Manado, this research found that social distance towards the “strengthening” of halal identity among Muslims is hardly seen among Christian respondents. The fact that Muslims have restrictions on consuming non-halal food, while Minahasa Christians do not have such equal restrictions on consuming Muslim food, confirms the quantitative data. In contrast to Muslims, who have restrictions on consuming non-halal food, Minahasan Christians do not have restrictions on consuming Muslim (halal) food. This study strengthens the argument that the “halal” identity creates social distance in Manado society among Muslims towards others and not vice versa.

Abstract

Since the 1980s, Japan has attracted Muslim immigrants, mainly from South and Southeast Asian countries. The emergence of these Islamic communities in Japan is reflected by the presence of around one hundred mosques and musallas (rooms or buildings for the performance of five daily prayers) on the Japanese archipelagos. This paper aims to discuss South and Southeast Asian Muslim communities in Japan, and the spaces used for their rituals and social activities as they have developed into full congregations able to support mosque construction and maintenance. I investigate how the transnational aspect of migration has shaped the architectural availability of places of prayer, and the development of the ummah (Muslim community). My data was collected from observation of Indonesian and Indian mosques in the greater Tokyo region between 2015 and 2017, and interviews with their congregations.

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the limited development of Syariah-certified hotels in Indonesia despite the country’s substantial potential in the global halal tourism market. Indonesia has actively promoted halal certification in the accommodation and hospitality industries, supported by central and regional governments. These initiatives align with Islamic hospitality principles, including halal-certified food, the prohibition of alcohol, modest dress codes for employees, and gender-segregated facilities. However, despite the rising discourse on halal tourism, the number of Syariah-certified hotels remains disproportionately low. This study seeks to understand why this gap exists and how the Muslim community perceives Syariah-compliant accommodations. Observations and interviews with 38 middle-class santri groups in West Java, particularly in the Jabodetabek area, reveal that their choice of accommodation is influenced more by cultural factors than religious ideology. Despite being religiously literate, many santri do not prioritize Syariah hotels when traveling. These findings highlight a disconnect between the supply of and demand for Syariah hotels, providing insights into the cultural and practical challenges facing halal tourism development in Indonesia.
