Abstract

The poison in Aceh (especially in Aceh Singkil) is called Aji. Aji is a mystical tradition aiming to achieve a certain spiritual level (maqam). There are some people referred to as Pekhaji (poison makers), whom the local people are wary of. And there are certain villages forbidden for foreigners because there is fear that the poison is added to food and drink. Even if a person is accused of being a Pekhaji or a village, it is considered forbidden, and no legal action is taken because it is based only on speculation. Aji as a spiritual practice is considered taboo; the Pekhaji's and forbidden villages are socially and economically marginalized. The forbidden villages and the Pekhaji are usually aimed at the poor and disadvantaged traditional village heads; the people accused as Pekhaji are poor people who do not get proper civil rights. This research examined rituals in the Aji tradition as part of social construction and analyzed religious studies by viewing social stratification in traditional villages and local rituals. The data in this research were collected through interviews and phenomenological field observations to explain all aspects of the Aji tradition in Aceh Singkil.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) can now be found easily in various aspects of human life ranging from computer programs, vehicles and devices. This for some people is quite worrying, but there are also those who consider it as an advance of civilization. AI, which initially only revolved around industrial technological advances, now doubles as part of ontological discussions, especially themes of consciousness. The intelligence possessed by AI in simulating is undoubted, especially with the existence of chatbots and algorithms. However, since its inception, AI has always been faced with the concept of consciousness. Consciousness is an abstract thing, because it is believed to be possessed only by humans. AI itself is considered to have a large content in human civilization and the future history of human civilization. In the verses of the Qur'an, human life is not a simulation, and consciousness is immaterial, and cannot be captured by science. Thus, AI can only be positioned as an instrument, which cannot achieve the status of having consciousness ontologically. AI is not value-free, technology in history has often been used to oppress humans and AI is considered potentially a disaster for humanity. This research is sourced from the literature study approach in finding data related to technological advances and the responses that surround them. This research is expected to be able to contribute new knowledge in terms of Quranic studies, history, technology and science.

Abstract

As a local religion, Parmalim in Aceh Singkil Regency Aceh Province is currently experiencing marginalisation in the presence of world religions such as Islam, Catholicism, and Protestantism. Based on the perspective of Islamic puritanism and Christian missionaries, Parmalim is categorised as unreligious or heretical. This study aims to analyse the genealogies of distribution and changes in Parmalim as the religious identity that has spread in Aceh Singkil. This qualitative research obtains the data through observation, interview, and documentation for two months. This study found that a segment of the Singkel community adheres to Parmalim as their cultural identity. Religious leaders, such as clerics and priests, actively seek to convert Parmalim adherents to Islam or Christianity through da’wah and missionary agenda. The hegemony of both Islam and Christianity makes their right still restricted. Thus, this study suggested the stakeholders fulfill their rights in education and religious and cultural practices as their basic needs.

Abstract

The term ‘kalak kampong’ (villagers) in Singkel (Aceh Singkil-Subulussalam) is commonly used by residents of riverbanks (julu) or hillsides (deleng). On one hand, this term is often interpreted as a hesitation to express their ethnic identity. The accusation of ‘cultural hesitation’ generally comes from local political elites in Singkel who have formed the ethnic concept known as the Singkil Tribe. In fact, the terminology ‘kalak kampong’ is an explanation of the power and economic disparities occurring in Singkel due to the persistence of modernism and developmentalism in the Aceh community. ‘Kalak kampong’ signifies that they feel inferior and not on the same social level as ‘urban people’ or communities that use the Indonesian language (urban language/Bahasa Indonesia). On the other hand, the term ‘kalak kampong’ also represents a unifying identity in Singkel, namely the unity as a traditional community that is homogeneous and industrially lagging behind modernization. This research was conducted using a descriptive analysis approach in cultural studies, with data collected through field observations and literature analysis related to ethnic identity and socio-economic dynamics in Singkel. The research aims to examine the relationship between power and economic disparities and the perception of ‘kalak kampong’ within the Aceh community. The results show that local political elites play a significant role in shaping and reinforcing the ethnic concept of the ‘Suku Singkil’ for their political and social.
