Abstract

Abstract

Journalist certification legitimizes Indonesia’s journalists’ professionalism in producing, managing, and disseminating information, including serving the public interest. According, to Indonesia’s Journalist Competency Test (UKW), journalists can be determined based on their competence level, such as young journalists, middle journalists, and senior journalists. Those three levels also dictate journalist into their position and function at media institutions. This condition presents a confluence of opportunities and challenges in Indonesian journalism professional practice. Journalists certification, on the one hand, validates the professionalism of journalists in the performance of their jobs and sets them apart from other information producers. But, on the other hand, normative measurement through certification mechanisms also promotes strict standardization which violates media freedom vigor for journalism. Paradoxically, the energy to raise journalist standards is unequal to the other areas of professional journalism, like attempts to raise the standard of quality content journalism itself and being professional journalists ethically, remain unaffected. This study elaborates on Indonesia’s condition in descriptive and qualitative analysis of journalist certification data from the Indonesia Press Council. Although the quantification of Indonesian journalists is still a delightful success on paper, it raises questions about the caliber of journalists and journalism practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

Privacy has emerged as a critical subject for media and communication research, especially with the youth's growing use of TikTok as a social networking site. This study aims to describe privacy among active young TikTok users through the perspective of the Contextual Integrity Privacy Theory by Helen Nissenbaum and the Privacy Paradox. This study adopts a qualitative research approach and a single case study. This research was analyzed through in-depth interviews with seven TikTok users aged 15-24. The findings reveal how youth navigate privacy concerns in their data practices, highlighting the role of contextual integrity in shaping their decisions. Participants demonstrated an acute awareness of privacy risks and employed strategies such as selective sharing, pseudonym use, and engagement with privacy tools to safeguard personal information. However, the study also highlights the persistence of the privacy paradox, where the desire for social validation often conflicts with privacy behaviors. These insights contribute to the theoretical discourse on privacy and offer practical recommendations for robusting safer and more transparent digital environments for youth.

Abstract

False information or “hoax” related to political, economic, religious, cultural, even health issues has become a cause for concern for many people. It is feared that the massive proliferation of hoax-related issues in our public sphere, both in the media and daily interaction, will lead to conflicts if it’s not handled properly. This fear has prompted some movements to fight hoax in Indonesia. The fight against hoax is conducted by many sides, both from government and non-government, in many forms. The Ministry of Communication and Informatics, the Police of the Republic of Indonesia, and the Indonesian Anti-Hoax Citizens have launched a number of anti-hoax movements by publishing information considered hoax. Besides, there are also some other movements to fight hoaxes, such as HoaxAnalyzer by students of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and Apps application by the Islamic organization Muhammadiyah.  On the global scale, the movement against hoax has been led by Google through Google News Lab and First Draft. The movement to fight hoax is conducted by combining technology and human’s cognition to verify the information. Discussion in this research will explore some anti-hoax movements in society. This study aims to map anti-hoax movements in Indonesia. The mapping is intended not only to explore the form of the movements and the methods they use to fight hoax but also to see how effective the movements are to fight hoax in Indonesia.
