Abstract

Music is an essential element of worship services, entrusted to music directors for arrangement and leadership. This study examines the strategies employed by music directors at BFA Church Yogyakarta. Utilizing qualitative methods, data were collected through purposive sampling of two music directors, with observations, interviews, and document analysis serving as primary data sources. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, involving data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. Findings emphasize the critical role of the music director in managing the worship music team, highlighting the importance of strategic planning and leadership in delivering effective worship services. Guided by Mark Cole’s theoretical framework, the identified strategies are organized into pre-rehearsal, mid-week rehearsal, and Sunday worship stages, closely aligned with BFA Church practices. Implementing structured strategies across these stages promotes team coordination and enhances the quality of worship music, contributing to a meaningful worship experience for the congregation.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of full-band music on the interest of youth in Sunday worship at HKBP Yogyakarta. Utilizing a quantitative research method, the independent variable is full-band music, while the dependent variable is the interest of young congregants. A sample of 67 individuals was drawn from a population of 670 using random sampling techniques. Data collection involved observations, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation. The questionnaire, based on indicators of interest and musical elements, was validated for reliability using a Likert scale. Results indicate a significant positive correlation between full-band music and youth interest, with a coefficient of determination (r²) of 0.26. This suggests that while full-band music positively influences youth engagement, 74% of their interest is affected by other factors. This research contributes to enhancing worship music services at HKBP Yogyakarta and offers insights for future studies on the role of worship music in engaging youth. The findings aim to serve as a reference for academics and practitioners seeking to improve the quality of worship music.

Abstract

The shortage of skilled worship accompanists in Indonesian churches, including GKSBS Daya Murni in Lampung, underscores the need for structured and contextual training. This study designed and implemented a phased keyboard learning model to regenerate younger congregants as competent accompanists. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, three teenage participants were purposively selected, and data were gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings show steady progress from basic posture and scales to chord application, transposition, and worship accompaniment. Instruction embedded in real services enhanced confidence, liturgical awareness, and readiness to serve. The study’s novelty lies in integrating structured pedagogy, worship context, and mentoring as a sustainable regeneration framework for small churches facing accompanist shortages.
