Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis of the knee is a degenerative joint disease that often causes pain, activity limitations, and balance disorders, particularly dynamic balance. One conservative approach to reducing symptoms and improving knee joint stability is the use of neoprene knee brace with hinges to provide compression and lateral-medial support, as well as enhance proprioception and neuromuscular control, all contributing to improved dynamic balance. Aims: To determine whether there is an effect of using a neoprene knee brace with hinge on dynamic balance in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: This research method is quasi-experimental with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The research sample consisted of 18 women aged 45-60 years who were selected using purposive sampling techniques based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. This study used the Time Up and Go Test to measure dynamic balance. Data normality was checked using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and statistical analysis was performed with a Paired Sample T-test. Results: Data analysis using a paired sample t-test showed a p-value of 0.000, indicating a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. The average TUG test time before brace use was 16.60 seconds and after the intervention was 10.06 seconds, a difference of 6.54 seconds. Conclusion: The use of a neoprene knee brace with hinge has a significant effect on improving dynamic balance in patients with knee osteoarthritis, and can be an effective non-surgical intervention option in conservative treatment.

Abstract

Background: Cervical collars are commonly used to provide comfort and restrict cervical motion in post-operative and pain management patients, with an average usage rate of 80.8% in cervical injury cases. Different collar types offer varying degrees of motion restriction, which is critical in patient recovery.  Purpose: This study aims to compare the degree of neck movement restriction between soft cervical collars and rigid cervical collars. Methods: This quantitative research used a cross-sectional study design. A purposive sampling technique was applied to select 20 respondents from a population of 212, based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Respondents were divided into two intervention groups: 10 participants wore soft collars, and 10 wore rigid collars. Neck movement restriction angles were measured using the Angulus application, focusing on six directions of movement: flexion, extension, right and left lateral flexion, and right and left rotation.  Results: The results showed significant differences in restriction angles between the two collar types. Rigid collars demonstrated greater restriction than soft collars, with mean differences as follows: 29,35(flexion), 15,10 (extension), 17,72 (right lateral flexion), 17,78 (left lateral flexion), 21,93 (right rotation), and 24,02 (left rotation). Conclusion: There is a statistically significant difference in neck movement restriction between soft and rigid collars. Rigid collars are more effective in limiting cervical motion across all measured directions. These findings highlight the importance of selecting the appropriate collar type based on the desired level of immobilization for optimal clinical outcomes.

Abstract

Pes planus (flat foot) is a condition characterized by the loss of the medial longitudinal arch of the foot, which can alter lower extremity biomechanics, including an increased Q-angle of the knee joint that may lead to functional knee disorders. This problem is commonly found among individuals with sports activities; however, knowledge regarding the management using flexible medial arch support remains limited. In order to decrease the Q-angle of the knee joint, this community service program aimed to increase the knowledge and abilities of people with flat feet in the use of flexible medial arch support. An initial survey, instructional sessions on flat foot, Q-angle of the knee joint, and flexible medial arch support, practical training on the device's usage, monitoring, and program assessment were among the implementation strategies. Over the course of a year, the program was carried out in phases, including administrative planning, coordination, instruction, hands-on support, and final assessment. The results indicated an increase in participants’ knowledge regarding the use of flexible medial arch support and their ability to apply the device independently. Furthermore, this activity contributed to improving community understanding of the role of orthotics and prosthetics in managing lower extremity disorders. An additional output in the form of educational video documentation was also produced to support broader information dissemination to the community.
