Abstract

Literary narratives had accompanied global economic exploitation of natural resources since the rise of Britain as an imperial force in the late sixteenth century marked by Thomas Hariot’s A Brief and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia (1588), in which Hariot narrates, describes, and inventories natural and human resources in Virginia to invite economic interest and to justify colonization. The tradition of writing a descriptive overview of conquered lands was then furthered in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by Marsden’s History of Sumatra (1783) and Raffles’s History of Java (1817) as British colonial rule extended to the Malay Archipelago. However, towards the end of the nineteenth century, as economic and political rule inevitably gave way to complex socio-cultural interaction, the fiction of Joseph Conrad set in the Archipelago, being novelistic in nature, provides a more dialogic portrayal of British colonial presence, particularly in Java and Borneo, which goes beyond mere justification for the exploitation of local resources. Following the cue from the work Edward Said in identifying textualization as a mode of colonial intellectual domination and Benita Parry in revealing the “ghostly” presence of empire in colonial fiction, I would like to argue that Conrad’s Malay fiction both justifies and problematizes the relationship between British colonial enterprise and the natural as well as socio-cultural environment in the Archipelago.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the performativity of masculinity in direct and mediated relationships by cell phones presented in Perfect Strangers (2022). Perfect Strangers (2022), a comedy-drama genre, presents a mediated relationship that causes blurring in gender identity that affects the masculinity performativity of male characters due to the mediation of cell phones. The lunar eclipse phase in Perfect Strangers (2022) becomes a film medium to convey comedy that contains problems related to masculinity performativity. This research is analyzed using film narratology by elaborating on Connell's idea of masculinity, Judith Butler's idea of gender performativity, and Cerulo & Ruanie's idea of mediated relationships.  The research will examine the cinematic presentation of the relationship between masculinity performativity in cell phone-mediated relationships in the Indonesian version of Perfect Strangers (2022). This research shows that in Perfect Strangers, gender performativity through cellular phones is depicted as causing blurring in physical or face-to-face relationships. Gender performativity which refers to the appearance and repetitive actions in face-to-face relationships in contrast to mediated relationships can be used to mask true identities including sexual identity. Non-heteronormative individuals can hide their sexual identity in mediated relationships

Abstract

(Title: Sexuality and Relation Man's and Woman's in the Poem "Persetubuhan Bumi" by Goenawan Mohamad). Inequality between woman and man in asexual relationship appear many time in Indonesia's poetry. Women are often being put in a second position even though they have the same competence and power with men. It also happens in relationship on daily activities, both at public space or at home. Women are often connected to a domestic work and have to do many things as away to prove her devotion to men. This affected even to the most private relation between men and women. Women often positioned as a tool to satisfy men's sexual desire. In Goenawan Mohamad's poems, he displays sexuality and relation between men and women in a unique and beautiful way. In this relationship, women are still put in second position, althought the woman genuinely enjoy and satisfied from the sexual activity. Women are shown as a passive body in the hand of men's power. This research is using theory of intertextual and gender. This research shows that there are many factors that created inequality between men and women in a subject of sexual relationship. Keywords: sexuality, relation, intertextual, feminist.

Abstract

This study examines the commodification of individuals with disabilities in advertisements by prominent fashion brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, and Smarteyes Denmark. The research is grounded in the growing narrative of inclusivity within the fashion industry, which, on the one hand, opens up representational space, but on the other often masks visual exploitation. Using a semiotic approach, this study analyses how disabled bodies are constructed within the visual and discursive frameworks of fashion advertising. Findings reveal that such representations frequently combine disability with a superficial aesthetic of diversity, wherein disabled bodies are depicted not as complex subjects, but as empathetic objects commodified for brand image purposes. The study highlights the need for a critical reading of the interrelation between disability, gender, and power dynamics in the contemporary commercial media landscape.

Abstract

My Year of Rest and Relaxation karya Otessa Moshfegh.
